expedite a passport and head to asia or europe. hostels are inexpensive and great to meet tons of great people. much more memorable then going to california etc.

Good one. But seriously, there is nothing to see in those states unless you're visiting family.

Go see the great places in America: Chaco, Mesa Verde, Canyonlands, Arches (definitely Arches), Rocky Mtn NP, Yellowstone, Glacier, Cascades, Crater Lake, Yosemite, Sequoia, Zion, Grand Canyon, Saguarro, Big Bend, and points in between.

I had to get one to register for the CFA program (you have to enter your number on the online registration form now) and it was shockingly quick compared to everything else in Texas. Get your birth certificate, go to CVS for the picture and then hang out at the Post Office for a couple of hours on a Saturday.

Yeah, and if you need to, pay the extra cost to expedite the process. But if you aren't leaving for a month or two, it should be processed in time for your trip.

Colorado then Wyoming/Montana/Yellowstone. West down 84 to Portland. West to Seaside then down the coast to San Diego. East through Grand Canyon and Santa Fe. West Texas.

thank for the tips yall. im leaning towards rimrocker's suggested route with the american west and cali. i was raised in east texas so louisiana, alabama and what not sound too much like home. cali is very different.

but if i can get a passport by june, i can go to other countries.. plane ticket from houston to england or france is like $1100. id have $80/day as a budget and i heard they got cheap public transport and student hotels there. this is crazy i never left texas but my first trip outside here might be to europe. gotta work the numbers some more.

I like this, but that is not very tight as you can get in hitting national parks on $2800.

There is a well defined path of parks, known as the Grand Circle

    http://www.utah.com/nationalparks/grand_canyon/grand-circle-itinerary.htm

    Mesa Verde
    Zion
    Bryce
    Grand Canyon
    Moab
    Capital Reef
    Monument Valley

    All in like 5-7 days

Also, it helps that the U.S. dollar is very strong right now. That will make your money go further. Look into hostels and student hotels as you mentioned.

How old are you? If early 20s, go to Europe.

I'm in Paris right now and the US Dollar is STRONG here right now.

    America. ***** yeah!

Your car breaks down and you have NO AC living in Texas.

Before I spent money on a trip I would get my car fixed (especially the AC).

Addressing the car situation is the obvious choice IMO. To hell with a trip.

But if you do go, enjoy!

Going to be impossible to get good recommendations without knowing what your interests are. To see a place takes one second, but then what would you like to do? What are your favorite things to do in Texas?

They changed it after 9/11 so you do need a passport to go to Canada.
