So what? We're still supposed to be a civilized society.

I doubt prisoners got into prison by being civilized.

Yeah, until he, or one of the thousands of others just like him, comes out of prison (you do realize most of these guys actually get out eventually) damaged and violent beyond your ken, and rapes or brutalizes someone you care about.

This is what I never understood about people's indifference or glee toward prison rape and brutality. Most prisoners eventually get out. Who do you want walking the streets with you and your loved ones? Someone who has been made more violent and brutal by violence and brutality in prison, or someone who has a decent chance of reintegrating back into society. Take compassion out of it, just from a basic self preservation standpoint the answer seems obvious.

I don't take pleasure or see glee in this, but I don't feel sorry for him either.

Question: Is prison rape just considered part of the sentence these days?

Nothing worth preventing or even worrying about

Do you think the system needs to be reformed so that prison rape and brutality is not a common occurrence?

Convicts didn't seem too worried about that when breaking the law.

It's a chance you take based on the choice you make.

You want taco bell? You might have the ****z for a while

You want to get hammered drunk...You might be hung over for a bit

You want to carjack someone, you might end up in prison where you might get raped.

Sure, I think rape and brutality should not be a common occurence, and from what I understand, convicts sentenced for nonviolent crimes have less worries about this than those in lock up for violent crimes.

I find it really disturbing that so many people just accept that rape in prison is part of the deal.

We have a massive population of incarcerated people, high recidivism rates and all we can do is say "should have thought about that before you broke the law."

Carjacking is bad and you should get punished for it, but is an outcome that sees the carjacker come out full of rage and hate and male power issues REALLY what we want?

Prison reform, police reform and ending the war on drugs. Those 3 things would make America a much more pleasant place to live. Unfortunately our society has dehumanized the victims of these systems and reform is unlikely in our lifetime.

I think you and I both know it SHOULDN'T be and I believe it should be taken seriously. People in prison should be reasonably safe from rape and physical violence. As I have gotten older, and after working as a prosecutor and defense attorney, I have come to the case that in many cases, criminals that have committed violent crime should be locked up for a long time........ but that sentence doesn't include rape or murder while serving their time.

Ultimately, I have concluded that the real purpose is to separate people that are inclined to harm other people.... we have concluded that these people wont change and we wont kill them, so we just remove them for as long as possible.

People who are convicted of violent crimes should receive lengthy prison sentences. Probably longer than current averages. I think people can change and rehabilitation should be a goal, but committing unjustified violence against another person is extremely serious and sentences should reflect that.

I had mentioned back in the day . . .
We want our prisons to PUNISH AND REHABILITATE

In some areas .. . it doesn't do either
Prison Rape seems to be the most powerful punishment we offer

As a married man with a family, being raped is pretty far down my list of punishments when compared to being separated from and probably losing my family. Not to mention being locked up and losing my freedom altogether.

It's easy to say that when you aren't being held on a leash by a guy who just beat you up while his buddy ejaculates in your throat while his buddy gets ready to tear your butthole up with you just praying you don't get aids when this stops 8 years from now.
