Yeah, we're not as bad as we're hitting right now (hitting below the Mendoza line as a team), but even when they play up to their normal level, it's still not going to be very good.[/QUOTE] This is where I'm at as well. We have 5% of the season in the books now, not a huge amount of the season, but enough games where you can start to make some impressions. My impression is that this offense sucks, and even if it gets better, it looks like the ceiling for the offense is to be average.
So much knee jerking in here... its about to become re-post worthy once we're well passed memorial day and things are very likely to be much different from where they are now. Springer, Gattis and Carter have yet to hit a HR... which we know they're not only going to hit them, but they're all still likely to hit 20+. There's about to be a very substantial course-correction factor on display.
I was at the game last night with a client, and that very thing came up. We were looking at the stats for each batter and we both said we were surprised the team even had 3 wins given all that. Keuchel accounts for 1 of those for sure...arguably for 2 (1.5?), since he started the game they won against the Rangers in extra innings.
You said "your boy" and I was thinking..."wait..he doesn't have a game." Then realized you meant the Irish pitching phenom, Son of Fire God. Yeah, we need to head to a game together soon.
If they win tonight, that would mean wins in each of Kuechel's first two starts and McHugh's first two starts. No doubts that they are this team's best starting pitchers... and at least they're saving their "better" offensive performances for those starts (rather than vice versa, which is all-to-commonly seen).
Obligate away... and then show me the post of you actively complaining when they let Martinez go, if you can remember exactly when that was. If you did, more credit to you... I complained about them trading Cosart, but even if gambling Jared goes on to have a Cy Young-like season, we've already moved on to an everyday starting CF and a 3B in waiting to keep tabs on.
More fun stats: They've had a runner on 3rd with less than 2 outs 5 times and have scored 1 run. They can suck at any time of day: hitting .196 in day games and .197 at night OPS by batting order: 1st - .640 2nd - .424 3rd - .442 4th - .335 5th - .362 6th - .886 7th - .701 8th - .879 9th - .761
Im trying to figure out what is more shocking...the fact that our BA is that low...or the fact that we've had that many runners in scoring position (feels like 10).
That and the .118 BAbip with RISP is bound to go up as well. That is incredibly low. Sure, we have looked bad, but we are bound to stumble into some luck. We are also only striking out at a 26% clip with RISP, so they are doing a decent enough job of putting the ball in play.
In all fairness, it's not our job as fans to make the "right decisions" on a message board. It IS Luhnows job to make the right decisions on personnel. Baseball is tough and as fair as it is to criticize him for JD you would also need to credit him for McHugh. But it's fair to talk about Luhnows moves even if we didn't comment about them at the time As for the team, this offense is gonna hit a ton of HR in the end, and we will be a team that likely stays around .500 all year It's 8 games folks, relax
Agreed... just pointing out that no GM is going to have a 100% track record, and there is some inconsistency when those mistakes are pointed out by fans. There are certainly controversial moves out there that are questioned... and when they don't work out, by all means criticize... but there was not one iota of a fan that had a complaint when J.D. Martinez was let go. Likewise, since nobody commented when they picked up McHugh or decided to keep Kuechel, Luhnow should get "praise/credit" every single time those two do something of note. Criticism/praise should be a two-way street... but way too often most will see/remember the bad and gloss over the good.
