Who is talking about living/dying by backup centers? The point is that every player who logs minutes can impact winning or losing. Backup center included.
Not when you have an all-star starting center. Can you remember Charles Jones' direct contributions in both 94 and 95? No you can't. Sure, Dorsey may have to play... but he won't be a difference maker. He's not the reason the Spurs are blowing out the Rockets right now.
If you're devoting an entier thread to it, it certainly seems like it would be difference-making. If the Rockets win, it won't be because of Dorsey. And if the Rockets lose, it also won't be because of Dorsey.
People blaming McHale for playing Dorsey like we have better options. Capela is trash outside of dunks. Morey needs to stop playing and sign a bigman
Yeah the blowout is on now and its not Dorsey's fault. Doesn't mean that backup players can never be difference makers which is basically what you were saying...like, youre not going to win a title based on your backup center (McHale), shooting guard (ginobili), small forward (elie), power forward (big shot rob)...yeah they never make the difference between winning and losing...
Okay agree to disagree. I would hope our coaches and players believe each of the players that hit the floor contribute something to winning or losing (as opposed to being the sole reason which nobody in this thread implied, ever), otherwise why are we playing them if it doesnt matter as long as you have all star starters...
You are completely wrong: 1. He's not trash on the glass. 2. He's very good at the pick and roll. This is needed in the second unit. 3. He's 10000% better at protecting the rim than Dorsey. The spurs had a layup drill going on with Dorsey in the game. 4. We have Capela under contract for 4 years. He's gonna get a lot of burn starting next season.
There's a stark difference between a KEY role player (which is what you just gave examples of), and a backup center to an all-star center. I'm not saying all bench players are unimportant... just saying on this team, the backup center should be decidedly unimportant. If the Rockets are relying on their backup center to play key/difference-making minutes, they're not as good a team as they think they are.
Not when the All-Star starting center is still getting into form after an injury layoff. He might not be a difference maker but you still want rim protection and positive offensive play from that position when the All-Star starting center is injured, i'd imagine.
The Rockets absolutely will rely on their backup center to play key minutes, because every minute is important unless it's a blowout and then we've got other problems. Bottom line, we are not a good enough team for the quality of our backup center to be a nonfactor. Dorsey may not be the difference maker, but improved play at that position absolutely would be a difference maker.
Yes, the Rockets are not going to win a title if Dwight can't play more than 30 minutes a game, let alone 40.... regardless of who his backup center is. Contending teams do not play players such as Dorsey or Capella a bunch of meaningful playoff minutes. Hell, its rare for playoff teams to give big minutes to three different power forwards (which is what people were expecting for Smith/Jones/D-mo before D-mo was finally shelved).

That's because they have higher quality players at backup center than Dorsey/capela....I'm not even sure what your point is now. Dorsey is playing meaningful minutes, he just isnt making a positive impact in those minutes. If we had a better backup center, we would be better. I don't understand how this even became a disputed notion.
A backup center who couldn't make a free throw if his life depended on it can definitely lose you a game. Losing a game can definitely lose you a series. Etc.
I ate Chinese last night & just took a huge dump...& I kid you not, it looked like Dorsey's overall game.
Dorsey was a horrible pick up by Morey, on top of which he gave him 2 guaranteed years when Dorsey probably would've been cool with 1 and 1 yr team option. There were other serviceable (veteran or rookie) centers in the league willing to do 1 year options to prove themselves. Didn't we learn our lesson with Chuck Hayes? Morey has a thing for 6'8 centers I guess.
Yeah Capella impacts the game much better than Dorsey. Clint changes shots Dorsey well... Just fouls people, and his jumping isnt that good, nor his lateral quickness. 0 factor.
