Huh? Those aren't easy to maintain a high GPA in...and I've never come across something that has failed like that...

Easy would be something Liberal Arts related/Kines/Psych etc.

The only thing harder I can think of, and with little importance would be engineering. A lot of people don't go that route because if you're 100% set on med school there is no point. The courseload might actually be more difficult to grasp in engineering, but medical school is like a marathon. Its impossible to know everything so knowing what to study, managing your time and taking the appropriate time to relax is key. Biochemistry, chemistry, physics, or Biomedical Sciences majors are consistently at the top of the class.

That's why there are interviews and such. I am fully confident that these med schools will not accept somebody who they believe will not complete the coursework, even if they are african american.

On the grad school side of things (I know, not completely analogous) a lot of the kids with higher GPAs fail out here because they don't know how to deal with failure. The kids with 4.0s struggle balancing everything just as much as the kids with 3.5s, but, the kids with 3.5s don't freak out as much when they fail a cume or an exam in a class and tend to bounce back better. Also, people with work experience and people who took time off between undergrad and grad school tend to do extremely well. Of course this is purely anecdotal, but it seems like a fairly consistent theme at both Oregon and Arizona.
