C.K not bad of a filmmaker himself. The dude understands photography and small details like the one where he's shopping at some deli and trying all those exquisite foods and fishes. Beautifully shot in HD, I've never been to NY, but watching this show makes me want to go, with the culture in all.

Time to set your DVRs. Louie is returning one week from today - April 9.

Seems the tone will be more like season 1 and less like season 4, per this Forbes preview:

For the last two seasons, Louis C.K. has spent much of his time on Louie exploring the ideals of the human condition – as pretentious as it may sound – through stories that would often drive his fictionalized character to interesting places, but not necessarily funny ones. Over the years, the FX series has evolved from a simple comedy to a show that is, for all intents and purposes, a half hour drama. However, after spending all that time away from the “funny,” the series has returned to its core form in season five.

The plot is as it always is: C.K. plays a fictionalized version of himself that’s not nearly as successful as his real life counter-part. He’s divorced, has two kids he shares custody of and lives life the best way he can. Unlike the previous season, however, that would often go to places that put fake-Louis in a hyper-reality that features garbage men coming through the window and a lawyer forcing him to pay a monthly settlement for assaulting a woman, this season is far more grounded. This time around Louis is just living his life, seeing his friends and performing stand-up, and through that simplicity, the show is once again featuring some of the laugh out loud moments featured in season one.

Much more than before, the series is playing like an experimental sitcom than a straight drama. In addition to the theme song being included again, the show now features true cold opens. However, don’t mistake that idea for laziness as the openings in question are just as thought provoking as the series has always been. Through them, C.K. is now allowing himself the opportunity to ask questions he may not be able to ask over the course of an entire episode, and the show is much better for their inclusion.

In his new season, it definitely feels like C.K. is trying to get more personal. Instead of trying to reflect the world on to itself, he’s just trying to show the world who he is. For a lesser show, this might seem dull. However, for Louie, going smaller actually makes the show more accessible, and thus funnier. That of course isn’t to say it’s without some of the dramatic moments that have made it the classic it is. The third episode in particular is a truly great piece of dramatic television that will keep audiences on the edge of their seat with ease.

Season five of Louie has brought the show back to a simpler time when it all it had to do was be funny. There was a true worry after season four that the show’s only path was to go more experimental and more art house. But, explicitly at one point, the show rejects the notion of pretension in order to just let loose for the first time in a while. It may not please some of the “fancier” fans, but folks looking to laugh are going to enjoy the 180 in some major ways upon its premiere.

I think season 4 gets released on Amazon Prime on April 10th. Was season 4 not very good?

It was just different. I enjoyed it but preferred the style and tone of the earlier seasons.

He finally wins. I would love for the 5th season to turn that win into a loss in true Louie fashion though.

Season 4 was just released on Netflix this week.
