I think it's different to say we don't need these tax breaks because we're rich, and another to say that obamacare is this horrible thing that no one should be on because it's the worst possible health care you can get, and then put your family on it because it's the plan you feel is the best for your family.

One might be hypocritical, but Ted Cruz is downright lying about Obamacare as being as bad as it is for people because otherwise why would he put his family on it. Lying is much worse in my opinion.

It doesn't make him more of a hypocrite.... although I suppose some of it could be the holier than thou attitude he brings to literally everything. Having said that, it is topical but a nonstory. Cruz has to worry about all the powerful people he gleefully ****ed over in his own party over the last 4-5 years. He is probably the least liked powerful party member in America and that will comeback to bite him.

You don't put people "on Obamacare". It's not a thing - it's a system. He's putting his family on private insurance, which is something I don't think he has ever said he has a problem with. The only aspect of Obamacare he's really using is the exchange, and that's an idea that's been in all the half-baked GOP alternatives too. No one has a problem with insurance all being listed in one central source so you can compare plans.

This really seems like one of those "we have to complain about everything the other side does" threads. Ted Cruz is a disaster on his own - there's no need to create fake scandals to show what a mess he is.

When Cruz compared those who were reluctant to defund Obamacare to being like Nazi appeasers, then as a strong man of character, you would think he would rather be uninsured than to use that system.

But then again, he didn't have to go to the Obamacare system. There are plenty of ways for his family to continue insurance coverage. He's probably thought of it as a political move; or if he didn't know he had other options, then he has been arguing against Obamacare with very ignorant views of the US health care systems.

Name one democrat who tried to shut down the government because of the carried interest exception and then started a private equity firm.

Give me a break. Cruz is just posturing so he can act like he feels for ordinary folks or he wants some contributions for the healthcare lobby.

He is a millionaire. He is in the Senate. His wife works for Goldman Sachs. He has access to any type of policy he wishes.

Exactly. A good conservative would go uninsured and pay the penalty so he can stick it to The Man.

Major, you deserve big time rep for this thread. You seem to be the only person here that even understands the basics of the healthcare law, the exchanges and the different sides of the argument on "Obamacare."

"Obamacare", or PPACA, is a massive law that touches an incredible amount of different parts of the healthcare industry. I could be against "Obamacare" for a variety of different reasons and still not have a problem purchasing individual insurance on a website.

I KNEW conservatives didn't understand Obamacare, particularly here in Texas, but I'm surprised at how many Democrats either don't understand it or pretend not to in order to attack someone who doesn't have a chance to win the Presidency anyway.

Except there was no reason for Cruz to buy his insurance through Obamacare
He might actually be lying about this. I would want proof to believe him Only a guy trying to prove a point would decline to put himself or his kids on either his great Federal Insurance or his Wife's policy through Goldman.

His wife is leaving her company.

He needs insurance coverage. Perhaps the coverage through Goldman's is too costly for them to want to pay the full COBRA coverage, or perhaps the insurance at Goldman's is too "much" insurance and they'd rather take a higher deductible plan for a few months.

There's all kinds of reasons one chooses not to take COBRA. As for purchasing on exchange vs direct or through a broker, maybe he just doesn't know any brokers.

Now, where they have lied is when his spokesperson said that he had to purchase on exchange because Obamacare has devastated the individual market. That's simply a lie. The exchange is the individual market. It's just a more complicated way to buy it. I would never recommend someone buy a plan on exchange unless you are trying to get a subsidy, personally.

In front of a packed audience of students who had no option but to attend weekly convocation, failure to attend affects their grade.

Despite that point being true, he did get a pretty rousing ovation. It would be nice to think that they all were there against their will and that they sat their silently, gave a polite clap and then went to class, but they actually cheered for the man.

I fooled with both. It was easier with the exchange as they simply have standardize plans and you can compare them very fast. The broker (prior to the exchange) was way more complicated with many options (and lots of back and forth) and no easy comparisons. However, with a broker, you got a person to answers all your questions. With the exchange, you got no body but yourself (when doing it online) to understand what's being offer. And some time, some plans are so new you have to research the company directly yourself to get a "feel" for how reliable they are. So of course, it depends on what you are looking for and your level of trust for each route. For me, the exchange was easily because I knew what I was already looking for and I'm comfortable doing my own research.

This is a non-story. He isn't getting a subsidy, so he isn't on "Obamacare." He is paying for the full price of healthcare, just as if he went to the insurance company themselves.

I don't like Cruz, but this is a seriously weak argument.

The issue with the exchange is that a lot of the plan information is a little misleading (not intentionally) and you don't have any context on the plans.

For example, your doctor loves United Healthcare and tells you to get a United plan. You buy the United plan on the exchange. Little did you know that United sells a cheap version of their network on the exchange in order to lower the price because they expect exchange shoppers to be more cost conscious. You find out that the network isn't United Healthcare's primary network, your doctor doesn't take it and your kid gets sick, you go to Texas Children's and work up a bunch of bills just to find out that they aren't in that plan either.

Oh, and quite a few of the published SBCs (plan summary) that were on the exchange were actually wrong, but that doesn't give you the opportunity to make a change now. Sorry!

I'm biased because I do this for a living, but I would recommend going through a broker even IF you buy on the exchange. It doesn't impact your price and you get value added, even if it's nothing more than a "hey, in case of a problem a few months from now can I call you for help with a claim?" Example, in my office we have a dedicated claims person that does nothing but help clients fight over claims so you aren't on the phone with them. Again, it costs you nothing, so why would you NOT take it?

I can't tell you how many people I talk to who come to my office for help because they ran into problems after doing it on their own.

Uh, wrong, he said he would get his health insurance via the federal exchange - these exchanges were set up and are operated under the laws and regulations of the Patient Protectoin and Affordable Care act of 2010 (aka "Obamacare")

The exchanges are not even close to being the part of Obamacare that Republicans opposed in the law. This is just plain stupid.

Was the exchange established pursuant to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010?

If the answer is yes, then your post is stupid.

What's stupid is the Republicans insistence, particularly In the case of a hard line ****heel like Cruz, that the term Obamacare, as commonly understood in everyday parlance, only denotes the parts of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 that they don't like.

To his "credit", in backtracking from his use of Obamacare over the weekend, Cruz apparently doesn't subscribe to the same ridiculously selective construction you and your Super nut just invented today

Cruz is campaigning on "repealing every word of Obamacare". I think that is fairly characterized as being opposed to the exchanges that were established under Obamacare.
