Cosart/Hernadez/Wates Trade

They have 6 starting pitching candidates now (with Jose Fernandez coming back)... and that's before possibly acquiring Haren.

I think he's referring more to that.

 

Keith Law has been fairly persistent in stating his belief that Cosart will end up in the bullpen.

I honestly don't see it. I think he succeeds as a starter or fails. While his stuff "looks" good, in reality he pitches to contact. Never has been able to generate swings and misses, and he walks guys, which is typically not a winning formula for a reliever. It's not a good formula for anybody really, but particularly for a guy only pitching one inning.

As a starter there is no pressing need to slam the door every inning, so that style works better.

 

His strikeout rate drops a lot as the game goes on. Based on his first inning of work, I would expect his strikeout rate as a reliever to be around 20%. Walk rate is pretty constant. He does give up weak contact. Does not measure out as a closer, but would be a good reliever in my book. That said, he's still probably more valuable to most teams as a 5th starter at least.

Well, nobody ever said he wasn't stupid... between this, and him likely behind the whole Appel throwing a bullpen session fiasco, his talent is slowly being eclipsed by his character issues.

If Cosart can pitch well none of this will matter, but he has PR nightmare written all over him.

 

I've always thought Bo Porter was complicit in the whole Appel thing, too.

It seemed clear last year that certain guys within the clubhouse more concerned about their own reputations, or something like that, than they were with the overall success of the organization.

 

And it sure seemed that the majority of the local media took those certain guys' sides.

 

It felt like a situation where Porter knew he was gone and was trying to save face as a person who defends his players. That sort of thing can go a long ways in a players eyes and Porter may be afforded the opportunity to coach again - so I don't really blame him.

That said, I do agree. He threw mgmt under the bus to catch his "guys" backs

I can, knowing the dudes he hangs out with. They are all degenerate gamblers, one of them even a bookie.

There are a number of reasons that he looks guilty

1. He immediately deleted his Twitter account
2. He said that more messages are likely to appear
3. He said he has never bet "on baseball" and never will
4. He said he does not have a gambling problem
5. The MLB is investigating it

Basically--it's clear he does have a gambling problem. The question is whether or not he bet on baseball (particularly Marlins games). If he didn't bet on baseball I kinda doubt he would've gone on the defensive in this manner. Can MLB prevent players from gambling on other sports? I assume they could include it in a conduct policy. Who knows? Maybe he's lucky he was busted before the season began. I wish he had bet on Spring Training games. This is amusing.
