Besides the immediate cap relief this year, doesn't this hurt us long term by deferring cap holds into the future like we did with Andre so many years? I have no idea, but I thought restructuring holds your future back.

According to the initial reports, I think this actually opens up $2 MM each year post-2015 for the remainder of his contract.

No, the opposite. They take the $10MM roster bonus and convert it to a signing bonus which is amortized over the next 5 years at $2MM/per year.

Link to Watt's contract on sportrac.

Not sure why the bonuses aren't carried over to the final two years of his deal (2020 and 2021).

Oddly enough, the extra cap room could've been used to keep a certain ex-WR.... one could venture a guess that his departure was more about performance (last year and the coming two years) than the money.

I think O'Brien doesn't like that Nix isn't here in Houston training...

He specifically said not to read into it.

The money does get pushed out and added to the remaining years of JJs contract. Next year we don't appear to have any key free agents to resign though and the cap number will be going up. Appears to be a shrewd move by the new regime.

I think AJ got off on the wrong foot last year with O'B complaining that he didn't want to be here for another regime. Then by not producing on the field made it easy to part ways with him. Just can't believe JJo has rode out the storm thus far.

Watt's contract will still be considered a massive bargain at those cap hits going forward, especially with the eventual cap rise. He'll be getting near top 10 QB money but not top 5.

So what... Coaches and politicians share a common bond when it comes to what they say in the media. And I believe if Nix was in Houston working out under their supervision he wouldn't have said that.

You can believe whatever you want.

Players and coaches and former players (with the exception of Andre Johnson) love Bill O'Brien and one of the things they say repeatedly is that he is honest with them.

And he was honest about not seeing Nix because he's not there working with the team. Lol..

Something to note regarding the Watt contract and the 8 million in savings this year.

It doesnt mean the Texans plan on doing anything with it. I think they're giving themselves the flexibility to do something, but not necessarily set on spending it.

If they dont use the 8 million this year, they can just carry it over for next season. So if the cap for next year is 145 million, the Texans will actually have a cap of 153 million. Basically, you could just be giving yourself even more flexibility next offseason.

In this case, Watts cap hit next year will be 2 million higher...so you'd essentially end up with 6 million more spending money in 2016 if you decide not to use any of it this year.

Since when did the NFL introduce rollover minutes to the salary cap?

Unless you mean JJ agrees to restructure his contract back the way it was or something if the Texans don't use the money they got afforded this season.

2011 CBA added rollover to the cap. Unused money under the cap is rolled over to the next season if you declare it in writing.

It's been a few years now...Teams are allowed the ability to carry over unused cap space.

Team apparently thought he played well as a starter.
