NT looks set on paper but Nix is still a big question mark IMO. I don't think we'll look at other NTs in the first few rounds but Shelton gives you a lot to think about if he's there at #16. He's a big-time prospect with a lot of player comparisons to Wilfork.
You'd essentially be cutting Nix if that happened though. You aren't going into the season with 3 NT's. I think they give Nix another season to turn things around and I think they have enough faith that Wilfork has something left that they won't spend a pick on a 3rd NT.
No way you draft a NT only type guy. You have Wilfork and Nix. You'll probably have another DL like Powe or someone that can fill in at DE or DT in a pinch.
A lot will depend on how confident the Texans are with Nix. Rumor a couple weeks back that the team soured on him and McNair's recent comments somewhat reflect that, even though he did mention that he is healthy now. I agree that you don't want to give up on Nix but Shelton is as good as a DT prospect as we have seen in the last couple drafts. Just think it would be something the Texans would have to think about.
For those ordering jerseys: <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Some <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Texans?src=hash">#Texans</a> jersey # info: 7 Brian Hoyer 64 Will Yeatman 72 Derek Newton 73 Matt Feiler 75 Vince Wilfork 85 Cecil Shorts III</p>— Drew Dougherty (@DoughertyDrew) <a href="https://twitter.com/DoughertyDrew/status/580082815758249984">March 23, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
The Texans have too many holes and issues to draft a backup NT to take Nix's job anywhere earlier than the 4th or 5th round. Prior to the Wilfork signing, yes, it was something to think about.
Don't get me wrong, if one of Cooper, White, or Parker drops to us, it's an absolute no-brainer. We also need a ILB but don't see any prospects worth taking at #16. Guess I'm looking at it from a value standpoint and that it is not necessarily Nix's job to lose at this point. Typically don't read too much into owner's speak but McNair's comments on Nix having to earn a spot are a little telling on where he stands IMO.

it's true. if you get a performance of 2011 w/o the injuries at qb position, with the ability we have at disrupting Offensive lines and creating turnovers, we can go far. Just don't go away from your bread and butter and get cute. so a performance of 26 tds/13ints and a rating in the 90s/ top 5 in +20 yards passes&1st down completions and a healthy arian foster should do the trick. the question now is can mallet or hoyer pull those numbers stay poise and accurate throughout the season? we shall see. I believe Mallet can. He might not have brady's goodlooks or furry boots but mallet's footwork is pretty impressive.

Pretty good actually. You couldn't have gotten a 5th round pick for Andre in trade and you couldn't have gotten 2 6th rounders for Brooks Reed. Pretty much a win but you don't expect much from draft picks that late in the draft but anything can happen.
