We bought a 2007 Ford Expedition new from Planet Ford in Spring. Last summer we had a leak in the AC system, and after estimates went from $1,200, to $1,600, to $2,400 they repaired/replaced a leaky hose and cracked compressor.

fast forward to the present... AC again isn't pushing cold air. Back to Planet Ford... estimates from $1,000, to $1,600 to $1,800. The same 10+ hours of labor (Ford, in their wisdom, requires the complete removal of the dashboard and surrounding interior trim to access the AC). This time, a leak in the blower.

Can't afford to repair it. Even if I could, the thought of 20+ hours of labor charges and $4,000+ to repair an AC system that for all we know will fail again six months down the road and requiring yet again another 10+hours of labor.

The one American car we purchase in many years... and the last.

Anyone have any suggestions on a less expensive solution or repair suggestion? We can't afford a new car but may have to get a used one by the time summer rolls around.

Why not go to a small shop? I definitely would not go to a dealership mechanic unless it was required to keep my warranty in tact.

All dealers will scam you. The ole its $1000 then jumps to $2400 to repair trick. Try Northside Domestics on veterans. Very decent shop and you will have it fixed today.

No offense, but how old are you? You never EveR take your car to a dealer unless you have a warranty.

Just picked up the Expedition. They handed me a bill for $75 "diagnostic charge." I had a short conversations with the service manager. He took one look at the expression on my face and had the cashier wave the diagnostic charge.

We'll need to get the AC fixed before it gets too hot. So please keep the recommendations coming (and yes... won't go to dealers... and yes, won't buy another Ford...). Thanks!

Thanks... I will give them a call for a quote or general idea of cost once we can afford it.

Dealers suck. The GM dealer here in Austin tried to scam me for over 1200 bucks for low brake fluid while I was in there for basic warranty work. Told me my master cylinder was leaking and told me that my power window was broken. Somehow the window fixed itself when I told him I would take care of it myself.

There is a reason that Ford resale values cannot compete with Honda and Accord resale values.

Think long and hard about this before buying used cars.

Nobody was ****ed harder by a dealer shop than I was by the Chrysler dealer in Huntsville. I don't really trust any dealer to do good / fairly priced work on my vehicle.

That said, my one experience getting work done at Classic Chevrolet in Sugarland was refreshingly pleasant.

No, leases are the financial time bombs. Of course cars are going to break but leases are a bad deal every time...
