They would only need to bother with it while at this gym, right?

I do wonder how they determine if someone who hasn't undergone any surgery is transgender or simply a cross-dresser?

Perhaps this is a silly questoin, but what would prevent someone with a fetish for being in women's locker rooms from dressing up as a women and claiming to be transgender?

Well, you could probably dress up as a woman and claim to be a woman.

I would imagine you have to indicate your sex when you join the gym. So you couldn't just pretend one day. You'd have to lie on your application and keep the ruse up.

Then both have a quick moment of embarrassment and move on with their lives. Just as they would it was a flat woman with short hair, or a long haired man in the men's locker room.

I suspect the woman in question, along with the conservatives pushing this story had other motivations.

Even if Planet Fitness didn't have a transgender policy since I doubt they actually conduct gender tests there probably isn't a way from preventing a man as dressing up as a woman and going into the women's locker room.

So a pre op tranny wants to go to the gym. No need to use the women's changing room.

Make all public restrooms and locker rooms co-ed, get over the puritan taboo of nudity...and move on or move to Saudi Arabia. :)

Easy to say. But men mistreat women constantly and there has to be some safeguards in place to prevent constant harassment.

With the popularity of "women only areas" and the "womens lounge" in gyms I don't see how this won't have blowback.

Im a little surprised this issue isn't polarized.

I completely believe people should have equal rights, regardless of whatever social stigma. I have a problem when people feel they should force their issues on others.

I dont understand this logic; co-ed locker rooms are perfectly acceptable for transgender, where they are allowed to share a room with penises and vaginas, but its not acceptable for them to be segregated into changing rooms of their physiology? I dont support this logic.

If a straight guy goes into a female bathroom/changing room, he risks getting into legal trouble. But all he needs to do is claim transgender and he is ok??

The fair solution is to create private (family rooms) where any individual can go, regardless of their issue.

I think transparency makes people honest, or at least too ashamed to act out because everyone is watching.

I've been in Mauerpark on an unusually sunny day in Berlin, with hundreds of mostly naked people and no one was being harassed.

And even in Tel Aviv, the bathrooms tend to be co-ed, with individual toilets in their own rooms and a common area for washing hands. No drama.

And then when I moved back to Texas I found myself waiting forever to take a piss because...gender specific bathrooms. I wasn't used to it.

Where is Sir Jackie when you need him?

On topic. Was discussing a similar issue with some people.

Why do people think the plastic sign outside of a restroom has magical powers? A rapist isn't going to look at he sign and go "damn, can't enter this restroom and rape this girl. Its against the law to use a ladies room"

Also where the hell are the opponents of transgender rights using the restroom? They keep talking about rape/murders and perverts violating their children if people can choose their restroom.... Where are these third world restrooms with no stalls or rules at?

It seems like a personal problem if you are taking your wife/kids somewhere where the restroom is like Afghanistan.

I will say that I do see an issue with an open shower being accessible by transgenders. But if you find an issue with this, you are free to shower at home or find a gym with personal showers.

Transgender Americans deserve the right to be treated as the gender they feel themselves to be, regardless of whether it's a formerly female person who sees himself as a man, or a formerly male person who sees herself as a woman. Most are taking hormone therapy to help become the gender they see themselves as being. Women who see themselves as men frequently opt for breast reduction, but surgery to create the male equivalent of a penis is a major and very expensive procedure, and I suspect that the majority don't take that route. I don't have a problem with the policy, and can't help but wonder what the reaction would be if a transgender American who sees himself as male used the men's locker room.

Transgender Americans deserve the same rights that all Americans should have.

Is that not MORE Rights though?
A Man who sees hims self as Man cannot go into the Women's locker room
A Man who sees himself as a woman can?

They both have penises. . . then they both are men
but one has a right the other does not

Deckard, while transgenders should have the same rights as any other citizen, they should understand that they do fall in a gray area for gender distinction. My opinion aligns with Space Ghost's, transgenders should use the gender nonspecific restroom. I think that's the best solution for all parties.

This narrow view of gender identity is outdated. Saying that a cisgender man and a transgender man are "the same" is not factual at all.
