Zero chance, if they didn't give him the early extension then maybe... But Les won't swallow his pride so we have another 3 years. I mean, what owner signs a coach to an extension for regular season performances???? Hopefully this year goes better, but time will tell.
Yeah, and I honestly wish I never even posted that b/c of extrapolations like this one. Had he engaged DMo in a lengthy conversation as the game continued, people would complain that he should've had his attention on the game. As I posted, I didn't even hear 3/4 of the actual words exchanged to judge the seriousness of what was being discussed. In any event, I actually think he has been decent about sitting guys when they aren't playing well. If Dwight is out, TJ is already playing big minutes through a back injury and Josh is also playing poorly, who are you yanking DMo by the scruff of his neck for? I personally wouldn't mind Joey getting more minutes against teams that are bigger in the middle, but it's not like there are a ton of options when both DMo and Josh are struggling and Dwight is wearing church shoes. There have been several games where he sat Bev and refused to let him close games because he wasn't playing well. Hard to sit Ariza because even if he's bricking, he is far and away our best perimeter defender. The only person I've really seen McHale inexplicably stick with for an extended stretch of time is Garcia last season -- I don't think Cisco brought enough outside of spot up shooting to justify stubbornly sticking with him, unlike Ariza. Again, I'm not saying he is without flaw. But I'm always going to be in the camp that thinks if you are a professional NBA player -- if basketball is your job -- knocking down open shots, fighting for loose balls, tracking down long rebounds, boxing out, finishing layups.... those are basic, effort-driven things you should just DO, regardless of who the coach is.
I've never been on the broken-record Fire McHale train, though I have definitely criticized him on numerous occasions and regard him as an extremely mediocre coach, at very best.
And I'll add -- I have more frustration with Morey than I do w/ McHale, tbh. The offensive philosophy appears to be Morey's, but the personnel and the philosophy do not match. If you want your offense to be predicated on layups and 3-pointers, probably best to make sure you get guys who can actually finish point blank layups and knock down 3s at an above-average clip.
No I just mean after we lost last year you believed we should fire him and I agreed. But you know we didn't fire him so when are we going to start pointing the finger at Les and Morey. And I don't agree with the whole broken record or knee jerk thing. He is mediocre as a coach but he didn't extend himself. So when you have fans saying Mchale is the best or a great coach ofcourse you are going to have fans that wholeheartedly disagree. If you look back the person who posted in this thread the most by far is a Mchale fan. So it's not so much people chanting fire him as much as people are saying he is something he is not and other people who are of the same mind as you are simply disagreeing..
QT, so now you agree with me? It seems that those of us that have been saying this for about 3 yrs now have been getting backlash. Its one thing to follow a failed strategy, its another to implement it with individuals that don't cater to its strengths...
Hell, I probably did post that right after we got bounced -- I still think we had the WRONG personnel on the floor considering we only needed .9 seconds of defense, and that is 100000% on McHale. If you need to defend for less than a second, there's no reason 2013-2014 James Harden should've even.... you get where I'm going. I'm not gonna revisit this & get my blood pressure up, though lol. That fury has worn off (mostly). That said, I definitely don't think he's the "best" and would likely not even describe him as a "good" coach. When it comes to adjustments, rotations, holding guys accountable when there's a feasible backup -- that's all him. But like I said, I'll never be one who blames him for guys missing shots, not battling for rebounds, etc. It's obvious there are those who do, and that's fine too. I just disagree, that's all.
I disagree with many of the Morey criticisms, but this I've always said. For the way we play, you'd think we'd have at least a couple of three-point specialists. I guess... Jet? Meh.
I think that minutes management has something to do with them missing shots, tired legs and all. Also for god sake if they are missing tell them to stop shooting 3's. How many times have we seen them miss and miss and miss and they still keep shooting the damn three. At some point you gotta say OK I know the three is our philosophy but the shots aren't falling guys let's run pick and rolls and try to get to the basket more. How about post up Harden more when that happens or run more cuts to the basket. This thread like it or not is still here mostly because of Mchale fans who after a win can't help but gloat. It's only recently where I decided I wouldn't tell them how ridiculous they sound. Because truly Mchale is still here because of Les and Harden is the real boss on the court anyway. Though he should do more Mchale is really reduced to cheer-leading.
Just watched the tape. I figured the fire McHale heard would be out strong tonight. Par for the course. What I wanted to comment on was that McHale looked like the morose Jeff Van Grumpy (who I do like as an announcer) after a win tonight. I thought it was sort of funny. The guys who want a tough guy coach should have been happy tonight.
I agree with this but also this is Les's fault. He wanted a faster more modern team but you let Morey go after Dwight Howard?? The guy who likes to slow the game down and post up. You play to your talent or you go and get guys who fit your philosophy, you don't just grab a bunch of guys and say hey run fast and shoot three's. The Rockets placate to Dwight by letting him post up but aren't they supposed to be run n gun?
I'm not sure how I feel about McHale. I'm pretty disappointed with how this season is unfolding, it's been an amazing effort to achieve what we have and Beverley tries his heart out, but harden is wrecked out there. What is most disappointing is that Brandon Knight, Mcw, Williams, Sessions etc have all found new homes via the trade deadline and I find it hard to understand how we didn't make a major change by acquiring one of these players. I mean carter Williams would do wonders for this team. Still, I am right behind this group and we just have to remain positive. I think if we win one series this year we can consider the season a success. I hope morey makes it a priority to resign brewer in the offseason and find an upgrade at the point. As for McHale, I feel that extension may have been slightly premature. Time will tell.
We just didn't play with energy tonight. McHale and Drexler have so much in common. Great players that are in over their heads in their current positions. Thanks, Les.
McHale, Morey and Leslie are all to blame for the 1st round exit waiting to happen. I see another classic late season collapse, one of McHale's staple coaching habits.
