Yeah, I said that earlier in the thread. Lewis wasn't actually good, he just looked good to Texans fans because we aren't really used to seeing coverage safeties. Playing next to Swearinger made him look even better because DJ is so bad.
Would still like to bring Lewis back as the 3rd safety. Would allow us to drop Swearinger in the box on 3rd downs and still play two deep much more functionally.
I looked it up yesterday; iirc, they'd save $20MM if he's released next year so he's almost certainly gone. Like DM, I'd prefer one of the guys we signed this offseason to work out. But if they don't... Brees to the Texans seems fairly reasonable. It's likely we could have a roster that truly is a QB away from being very scary.

I haven't studied/don't know the salary cap ramifications - but given the relativly paltry price of Mallett/Hoyer... if Brees was available for a reasonable return, I'd be down for delaying the Mallett/Hoyer era with a 2-3-year rental.
Exactly what I was thinking. If they continue to build the roster up, they could run into a situation where they are seriously looking at being a QB away from title contention in an offseason where Drew Brees is looking for his last stop. No, you won't get a 5 year window, but maybe a 2 year window? I'd settle for that. Of course I'd prefer that Mallet or some drafted QB turn into the guy who makes us legit contenders for 5-10 years, but I don't see it happening.
They're almost certainly one of the three teams kicking Wilfork's (spare) tire. I would guess a JJo/Graham/some other restructure is probably a few hours away from being announced (depending on when they have to create the cap room to make additional roster moves).
I'm convinced that JJo is going to get an extension that lowers his cap hit. From everything we've heard, the new coaches love him just as much as the old coaches and he's a leader on the team. I expect him to get a new 2 year deal that lowers his money and then they draft a CB this year, maybe even in round 1.
At least. The guy is still an upper-echelon great QB (I've never thought he was in the same class as Manning/Brady; but certainly best of the next tier). I'm starting to talk myself into Drew Brees right now so I should probably step away. Native Texan. Extremely smart. BOB would LOVE him. And I'd rather get him now - before we have to part ways with Foster. I think we'd jump into the Colts' league with him. (And it'd be a nice shot back at AJ..............)
Well slow down folks, he's probably not going anywhere this offseason and if he were we probably couldn't make it happen. Next offseason is the one.
I don't know that the "Colts' league" is all that better than the Texans are now. They are basically a bad good team which could be a description for the Texans this season.

He also didn't have the 2nd highest 2014 score of the FA safeties. Mike Adams, Landry, Nate Allen, and Devin McCourty all scored higher. Either way, it is an upgrade from last year. I still would like to bring Lewis as backup/insurance/flexibility.
For the minimum I'd have no problem bringing him as one a few veterans fighting for a job on this team, but I wouldn't want him to be a "solution."
I guess they're keeping him to sell tickets? Seems like this is a lost season for the Saints. Drew is going to phone it in like Andre did last year.
Well they can't trade him and they can't cut him, all they can do really is let him play out one more year.
