This. It is amazing the amount of free fun that can be had without paying a thing. You can often get in to the "paid" stuff simply by being nice and asking politely. My son and I go every year starting with the Game/Tech portion on the weekend. Looking forward to Spoon at Auditorium Shores this year as well.

Use the park & ride and take the train to the convention center. From there, most transport is free by shuttle; just be polite and ask because it really doesn't matter to the drivers unless the shuttle is full with "paid" folks. The train pass also doubles as a bus pass for quick jumps on the bus. Last year was cool with free rides in the Chevy Volts.

The crowds are all gone by Sunday morning on 3/22. It's eerie to see how fast 6th Street is cleaned up and quiet within 12 hours of the last music show on Saturday.

Good to hear. I have never been and am going this weekend for the first time. I don't have a pass but my buddy said the free stuff is worth it. Got a cheap hotel and plan on just showing up and having a good time.

The daily MetroRail commute is already becoming packed and I don't have much hope for next week being anything other than a nightmare.

I am thinking of doing a day trip to see one thing in particular
    Ava DuVernay is speaking

Will I need to buy a pass [do they have day passes]
or can i pay at the door
or is it free? [doubt it]

    http://sxsw.com/film/news/2014/sxsw-film-announces-ava-duvernay-rza-additional-2015-keynotes

Looks like you need a badge to get in, which is super-expensive (starting at $700 now http://sxsw.com/attend). I'm not aware of any day passes, but someone else here probably knows for sure.

You could PROBABLY slip in unnoticed without a badge, but that's always risky.

You can't really slip into an Keynote address. The official volunteers are notorious sticklers to rules who won't succumb to any amount of bribe I've found in all the years I've been visiting. They seem to take their jobs very seriously.

What's the attire like on 6th street during both night and day?? A friend of mine was telling me that nobody wears button ups at night on 6th street. Don't wanna look like a suit :)

The dweebs at the Interactive/Technology portion wear all sorts of button ups and out of fashion clothing. Nothing wrong with wearing button ups on 6th but leave your Brooks Brothers attire at home. Also don't dress like SAE fraternity members meaning no khakis and sandals.

People definitely wear button downs at night. Day time is different and looks like any other festival where people where tanks, collared shirts, t-shirts, really whatever you want to wear.
