This is what I felt all along... even when people were clamoring that the Texans should use the "franchise tag" on him just to ensure he stays so they can further evaluate him.

Houston gives him the best chance to have some sustained success and see a big contract in the future (and not one that he gets cut after one season).

Won't know until the numbers are confirmed but they're at ~ $7MM with Fitzpatrick (and estimating draft pool of roughly $5MM); I assume Hoyer essentially replaces Fitz's money. And that doesn't includes Johnson's $8.8MM or any renegotion/release of JJo (which I assume is being worked on right now).

Long term backup money for Hoyer. McCown/Sanchez money

@JaysonBraddock: Brian Hoyer's contract is expected to be 3 years and in the range of $12-14 million. Getting more due to playing experience.

They do have to see how that torn pec responds... still such a strange injury that happened in warmups that significantly affected his performance.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with having two capable starting QB's on the roster vying for playing time... especially ones with an intimate knowledge of THIS system.

Hearing that Fitz might be traded to the Jets??

Mallet and Hoyer...its a New England reunion. Also quite telling that both guys would rather stay here and compete for a job rather than go to something else foreign independently. I believe in Bill O'Brien: And while Hoyer was absolutely bad for the Browns, and Mallet's chance was limited by the end of the year...this can be nice for the Texans.

Stop patting yourself on the back; that was a "what if" exercise that was literally derailed days later when Mallett's season ended. He doesn't sign this deal if, as we speclated then, he pulls a Nick Foles the final 7 games, especially if they had made the playoffs.

More Mediocrity after Mediocrity but what choice did the Texans have?

Stop back-peddling for suggesting an absolutely ludicrous scenario at the time, even if he hadn't gotten hurt and pulled a "Nick Foles" (which i'm not even sure what that means, as we all saw what happened to Foles just one year later as a prime example of why you don't bend over for any QB who has a good handful of games) ;)

If he's leaving money on the table now to stay here where nothing is guaranteed... he likely leaves money on the table at any point (albeit, he'd be paid more if he had finished the season strong... but not franchise QB tag more).

It's not a backpeddle; it's pointing out the intellectual dishonesty of your "I win the internet!" claim. Once he tore his pectoral muscle, the debate effectively ended before it really began. If he had a pulled a "Nick Foles" (and you know exactly what that means in this context), there would have been a significant market for him. Heck, there was reportedly a market for him as is, and he played 4 healthy quarters.

Training camp invite, practice squad contract.... or perhaps Kubes brings him to Denver in the same role.

If we can get Joseph to take a pay cut then we will still have a solid amount of room (around $15MM after the Dre situation is resolved). Gives us a chance to go after a legit safety (Parker or Searcy) and a couple of WRs (Hartline/Douglas/Hankerson/ etc.).

Exactly... as is, he left money on the table.

Honestly, I didn't even remember it was you suggesting the franchise tag till you entered your response... and at the time, it was suggested that there would be zero reason for Mallet to "take less" to stay here, even after it was pointed out that he possibly would have a comfort level in this system that would be worth more to him than simply taking the best offer.

This isn't a case of "I won the internet"... just re-iterating that comfort-level, personal relationships, and long-term future/success level may play more of a role in player's decisions than simply "best offer available.".

There's are basically one year deals for both QBs(depending on what guaranteed money Hoyer gets). You can cut or trade one next year if you find a QB in the draft in 2016

Texans' Rick Smith and BoB are doing a good job signing guys IMO. Maybe we will have a good draft this year finally. If one of those top WRs drop to us in the first round I have no doubt we take them

Just gotta pray that DeVante Parker falls to us. We might need to trade up to get our guy.

$5MM for that so really $15MM. Enough to go after a safety and a couple of WRs.
