Really hate the Hoyer pickup...but as long as it's not a ridic contract i can live with it. Mallett needs competition, but ******* Hoyer was awful every Cleveland game I saw last year. That game vs the Jags was some of the worst QBing i saw the whole year last year.

As well as Fitzpatrick played, relative to expectations, we all saw the offense look night-and-day different with Mallett under center. So my guess is Fitzpatrick was on the outs and they wanted a competent, system-knowledgeable back-up for Mallett. I haven't seen the deal yet - but I assume Hoyer inherits the, what? ~$3MM we save with Fitzpatrick release?
That makes sense to me. Hard to say what I think about the Hoyer deal until I know the numbers and how that affects the Texans going forward.
Wow what a deal for the Texans. $1.75MM guarantee in Year 1 and no guarantee in Year 2. Makes the Hoyer deal seem worthless if it is higher than Fitz' cap hit but whatever. This is really interesting

No, not necessarily wrong... but BOB personally knows the strengths/limitations and ability of each QB to run "his" game-plans and feels otherwise. Again, I'd rather have my front-office and coaching staff be pro-active and encourage open competition, rather than just hand a job to a player finally having a non-awful season, due to "loyalty".
True, but I doubt his contract will be so onerous as to prevent them cutting/trading him after this season if a better option arises, ala Fitz.
Yeah, I really liked Fitz; he wasn't very good but seemed like a good dude. I just think he was ultimately a bad fit for this system - limited arm, wrong/slow reads, too quick to tuck and run. Hoyer provides insurance and keeps Mallett on his toes. Hopefully, we're all griping about a player that never sees the field.
How much cap room would we now have, assuming 1) Fitzy is cut/traded and 2) Hoyer is signed at 2x that of Mallett? It would be ~$6 MM, correct? Not much, but perhaps enough to bring Wilfork on board.

As I reported yesterday, Texans have signed Ryan Mallett. Mallett left "significant" money on the table. This is where you see players improve/regress depending on the system they're playing in. Mark Sanchez looked even worse his last year as a starter with the Jets... yet looks like a pro-bowler with Chip Kelly. And at no point during Hoyer's tenure as a a Browns starter (where he went 10-6, surprisingly) has he been deemed "damaged goods", or basically what Schaub became.
Yeah, my guess is they're essentially commiting to Hoyer as the back-up "long-term." They'll give Mallett 2015 with a handshake promise to rip his deal up and pay him if he runs with it. If not, Hoyer bridges the pivot to plan B.
Hoyer and Mallett both believe they are going to be the starter hahaha. Preseason should be interesting... but Mallett should be the guy no matter what.
