Its for competition. Both have shown "flashes", but neither has shown enough to be outright gifted the job. They both come from the same Patriots system, and BOB has worked with both personally. I'm willing to see what Hoyer can do with the right system... again, he had some success in Cleveland (10-6 record as a starter). Its pretty much an ideal situation, given what all is available... and there's a chance each pushes the other to become even better (with not much noticeable drop-off if one was to get hurt).
Eh it isn't cut and dry like that. OB basically got the best out of Fitz' physical traits and Hoyer has more physical talent.
Maybe Hoyer is just signed so he can face the Suh and the Dolphins. He will stay on the bench the rest of the season. Gotta keep Mallet healthy
I assume the thinking is that they can get a pick for Fitzpatrick. As long as they can get Hoyer for about the same money as Fitzpatrick, then you can flip Fitz for a pick. It ends up being a net gain of a pick if you figure the talent and money for Hoyer and Fitzpatrick is the same. Smart move if that’s what they’re doing. Of course, this is all dependent on re-signing Mallett. If that falls through, then they have Fitzpatrick, Hoyer and Savage. They probably felt like they needed to get Hoyer independent of anything else that happens.

my body isn't ready for hoyer. =( this is like putting fitzie in shotgun with no arian foster in the backfield on 3 and 2, a recipe for fail. And if it's for competition, then that's fine but it isn't always that plain and clear. Why didn't brady beat out bledsoe in training camp earlier in that 2001 season? because bledsoe already had more time with hoodie as a coordinator and in his first year as the head coach. I'm scared that before a down is played hoyer has an upperhand because he spent more time with B.O.B All i want from my qb is to be smart, move the chains and a full set of hair. he doesn't have to have a rocket launcher for an arm.
This is the ideal situation given the circumstances. Two QBs that OB is familiar with competing for the job. They know the offense and O'Brien should get the most out of their skills. I like this a lot. Especially if we are able to get ANY sort of draft compensation for Fitz.
If the plan going into this season was just with an unproven Mallet, people would be complaining if/when he had faltered that he shouldn't have just been handed the job after "one good game." At least this way, its an open competition that possibly makes each better... and given the slim pickings available at QB, BOB could have done worse than get two former proteges who are deemed to be comfortable running his system.
Nothing about BOB thus far screams, "I'm going to go with this guy because I'm loyal." If that's the case, why even sign Mallet at all? If anything, Mallet has a leg-up because he was here last year and knows THIS iteration of the system better than Hoyer. If he gets beat out in an open competition then perhaps Mallet isn't as good as that one game he had. Again, this solution (no matter how people dissect it) is still better than handing the job outright to either Mallet or Hoyer individually.
Given the circumstances this has been a great offseason thus far. Could have been a disaster but we avoided that. Now we need to start filling some needs but that won't happen until the second wave of FA.
I think I'd rather have Fitz as the backup than Hoyer. Am I wrong? <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Ryan Mallett's deal with the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Texans?src=hash">#Texans</a> is a 2 year deal worth $7 million.
