Texans re-sign Derek Newton to 5-year deal

    He improved considerably last year, but he was sucking hard before that. Mixed feelings. He could regress, he could improve.

    Pretty crazy how he went from what felt like the worst RT in all of football, to one of the better ones.

    He had a Trevor Ariza style contract year.

    pretty sure you could say that about anyone. Based on his pattern of improvement, seems more likely that he'll at least stay at this level for a while, so it's hard to argue much with the deal

    I think a lot of it has to do with him coming back too soon from his knee injury. He should not have played in the early part of 2013.

    He's also likely a better fit for this type of blocking scheme, much like Myers was more suited for zone blocking and now gone.

    Newton owes a lot to Kubiack. because Gary took a lot of flap for sticking with him after so many mistakes early in his career.

    O'Brian got a near all pro performer last season. And Newton did not regress all year.

    Newton is on the verge of perenial pro bowl status.
