...would love to see what happens to the first team who gets caught red handed doing that. That's such a serious infraction that the league almost has a vested interest in covering it up and keeping it quiet because of all the suits that will hit the NBA as well as any team caught doing that.

I agree with you that without oversight it almost certainly happens more than we realize. I'm curious how prevalent it is though and how much money is being distributed under the table.

...as for the "what's TJones ceiling" debate(in a completely unrelated thread that this point), I don't think the guy will ever be an all star but he can be a solid starter/roll player while he is young. I wonder what happens to his game as he ages and he doesn't have the overwhelming athleticism to get him easy buckets. Obviously he's still relatively young(just turned 23) but unless he develops more of a skill game, he's not going to be a starter in his late 20s. My point is, in 2016 when he is a RFA, I'm not sure you want to offer him a 4 yr deal unless your confident he has more development to go. Right now he looks like a less skilled but more athletic Carl Landry to me which is great because I loved Carl as a Rocket, but he never was the game changer despite being a guy who could get stats efficiently.

I would love to be wrong about Jones, but I don't think I am...

    This is reasonable.

Don't hold your breath. It will start off looking like an apology then end being some essay on something else that defends his position.

This is absolutely baseless, but what are the odds on this is being the way that Morey and Les got DH to commit to Houston?

You don't remember the Joe Smith saga?

    http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/01/nba-joe-smith-illegal-contract-timberwolves

This is as close to what you are describing as possible. Basically killed Garnett's chances of staying in Minnesota and winning anything for the balance of his career. And that was for a future agreement.

What you're describing is clear cut undisclosed agreement akin to Joe Smith, playing a player under the table. Here's what the cba says about it:

For more detail read the actual cba document at nbapa.com, section XIII, Circumvention Article. It's all there.

Howard's contract is huge. Doubt they did that.

So, what is Barkley talking about when he frequently says how the Rockets owe him a lot of money? I agree with your research. I'm just wondering what Barkley is talking about.

Maybe, maybe no. That's for basketballholic to decide.

If Terrence becomes an All-Star I'll admit I was wrong.

If Terrence becomes a superstar I'll admit I was so totally off that it's funny.

If Terrence ever shoots 37% from the 3-point line for an entire season while averaging a minimum of 1 3-point shot per game or eclipses 44% from midrange for an entire season...I'll admit I severely underestimated his improvement curve and drive to get better.

If Terrence only shows incremental improvement up through his mid 20's but remains a role player and maybe a slightly above-average NBA player (that means somewhere around the 175th to 225th best player in the league or conversely the 225th to 275th worst player in the league...then I was generally accurate in my projection of his career.

Can someone please tell me why basketballholic is even entertained on this site? He's a phony insider, and none of prognostications have ever been close to being true.

But if Jones starts for a playoff team, like the Rockets during the playoffs this season, you won't admit to being wrong?

"I think less than 50% at best on him being a starter on a playoff team. Probably right at 50/50 or a little above on starting on a lottery team."

    That's pretty dismissive of Jones.

What if he becomes a starter for a playoff team? That puts him in top 150 right? And most likely makes him better than about 2 starters on average in an eastern team because most of those teams suck.

He was the starter on last years playoff team.

The better question is why does anyone still not have Basketballholic on ignore?

No, starter on a playoff team is not automatic top 150. Besides the 150th best player is the mid class of role players. So, top 150 doesn't mean star or All-Star or anything close to that. 150 means role player.
