I don't think it is silly but it's sad when we become insensitive and indifferent toward cronyism and injustice. That's how these things spread.

Sorry, but a couple anecdotes from an online message board do little to disprove what common sense tells us happens at every school/company in the country. I wouldn't say I'm necessarily in favor of the practice, but I could see it as a necessary evil. Given their connections or turning around their academic performance in college, I bet quite a few of the admits from the crony system end up doing quite well in college and beyond despite a subpar high school record.

Additionally, as long as UT has a guaranteed admission policy (top 10%, top 7%, whatever), I can't put a lot of credence into complaints from kids who don't get in.

I don't blame UT at all. They're trying to protect their funding. I think a legislator who has funding power over the Texas university system shouldn't be writing letters of recommendation for a student to the president of the school. He obviously has a conflict of interest and is applying undue pressure on the school. That's a matter for a congressional ethics body, not a university ethics body.

Unfortunately this happens in just about everything including school, private sector jobs, government (in both parties), etc... Who you know matters way more than it should.:(

What are you heralding Illinois as? All I'm seeing is hard evidence that another large state university practiced the exact same policy.

Think about it for a minute, it is an example of another large state university practiced the exact same policy but once it was found out, the board of trustees was called to resigned and many of them did.

Taken with the examples from College Confidential, I would think many Universities do NOT practice it.

If you guys have examples of ALL of them do it, like various posts had suggested, let's throw them out there.

I don't mean to offend, but I am curious as to your age.

Using one court case and message board posts as some sort of definitive proof that this doesn't occur shows a lack of real world experience.

If you are older, I have some beachfront property in Arizona to sell you. I'll even show you some message board posts as proof that it's legit.

Who said they were definitive proof? They are 100% better than yours, though.
