Solid third season. Spoiler It's great that they continue to show how gaffes and momentary loss of control can undercut manipulation and ambition, particularly the confirmation hearing. Spoiler The primary debate was terrific and really validates one-two seasons worth of watching those two character actresses. When people put up a "classy" chicks thread these are the types I expect to see. Spoiler The secondary arc's resolution in the finale was well parsed. Especially striking that the target made it more ethically ambiguous, but logistically irresistible.
Just got done with the 10th episode. So far, I'm not loving this season. It's definitely a lot less fun seeing FU play defense, rather than offense. Being the POTUS puts him under a microscope, and since he's at the top, there's nowhere to go but down. Or undergo a lateral movement. In previous seasons, it was fun watching Frank manipulate different people to get what he wanted. I feel like Doug's storyline was pretty useless. Anyone not really care about his storyline as the episodes went along? That physical therapist was super hot though. And the twist with the book writer seemed to come out of nowhere, to me. Maybe binging 10 straight episodes has dulled my senses, and I know I'm not done with this season yet, but 1 and 2 are stronger seasons, to me.
How are more people not talking about this? This season was great! Feels weird since I binged watched and now have to wait a whole year for a new season to come out.
I agree that this season feels like a step down from 1 and 2. Not sure if it's being creatively interfered with or what. That scene in the church was super telegraphed too, only made Frank cliche.
I'm halfway through season 3 but it seems like a huge step UP so far from last season which was a bit of a let down imo
Just binged it. Spoiler Maybe because it was foreshadowed (I knew exactly what was going to happen just by looking at the photo Netflix displayed when pre-loading the finale) I couldn't believe that it ended on a cliff hanger like that, felt like the penultimate episode, not the last one. Looking fwd to next season, I'm thinking there's no series if he loses the primaries.
I was pretty disappointed by this season. Seemed like it became the West Wing or something, all they did was talk policy. But it seems some people liked that. Spoiler I was expecting this to be it, as the British one was 3 seasons. I expected **** to hit the fan fast, while Frank battles to piece it together, getting more ruthless than ever before, killing people we'd never expect, and then finally shoot himself in the head. Maybe a bit dramatic, but who would've thought Clare saying "we're murderers Frank" in the preview was just figurative. Doug's' storyline was definitely pointless. Him killing Rachel would have meant something earlier in the season, but as the last episode of Season 3 it just seemed annoying. It buried anything left of Frank killing Russo, which was the kind of content I, and I believe most viewers, liked.
Some of these complaints seem pretty unwarranted Frank can't just **** over everyone all the time and win no matter what. That would be boring. That would make this show the Entourage of drama tv. He has to lose and win to make each outcome more substantial
I agree. That's what I hated about season 2. I thought they made the other congressmen/President/Raymond Tusk extremely stupid so Frank could keep winning and become President.
I have one episode to go, but this season is a major step up from Season 2, which was ludicrous on many levels.
Season 1 was the best, season 3 is like a CBS drama. They are STRETCHING any plot to keep this thing going. thumbs down unsubscribe
Spoiler I found season 3 to be the weakest because it went from one extreme in season 2 (as mentioned in your post) to the other extreme of "Frank against the world". Season 1 Frank was cool and in control, facing and dismantling unlikely odds. Season 3 Frank is the opposite. He is a reckless buffoon and unnecessarily alienating everyone. Many of his problems are created due to his doing. One could argue that absolute power has gone to his head, however I find that narrative boring. The title House of Cards implies a story meticulously and carefully built, with the smallest thread (Rachel for example) bring the entire story to its knees. I would rather see Frank fend off countless oppositions being crafty and ruthless, being triumphant at every turn, both in private and public, with a small fray bringing everything down. Instead, Season 3 should be called House of Titanic. All Frank has to do is avoid the iceburgs, but instead hits every one in his path. This brings us to the pointless Stamper/Rachel story line. Rachel could be the minute force that brings down the House of Cards, however all she wants is to be left alone. Her significance is very small compared to Frank killing two people, Franks homosexual experiences, the journals, and all the shenanigans Frank commits. Instead, the show spends 1/3 of the time focusing on Stampers rehabilitation, him harassing Orsay to find Rachel, only to kill her to prove himself to Frank. Personally, I felt season 3 was half assed just to bake up another season or two or three.
I don't disagree. I'll keep watching future seasons because I can knock them out so quickly, but Season 1's quality hasn't been close to being matched.
