So which is it, Morey or McHale?

I wonder how much of Mchale's offensive issues are from a lack of a PG that can run the offense. We haven't had a true PG in the last 3 seasons since Gogi/Lowry.

Because the R&R offense relies a lot on players being very smart and reacting. It's not like the motion offense where everyone is running around.

Harden IMO (not knocking him) is a very gifted playmaker, but I don't think he is the kind of guy that is fantastic at directing the offense.

Watching Pablo run the offense, I see a bunch of great offensive plays ACTUALLY being ran whether it's from him directly, or setting up a hockey assist etc.

The simple answer is Harden (which should be credited to Morey and luck).

The slightly more complicated answer is DMo.

A little more complicated is Brewer (which should be credited to Morey).

In general, the answer is Morey. McHale has his flaws but not as bad as some make it. He is not a make or break kind of coach. Morey is responsible for building the team as it is. Any decent NBA coaches would be able to get the result from these players.

But I think the OP has a strawman argument against Morey's critics.

A lot of Morey's criticism can be summarized into two categories:
    1. Morey has not produced a winner in the playoffs.

So being the fourth best team in the West (even with all the injuries) does not impress those who criticize Morey at all. You'll have to bump this thread IF the Rockets achieve any success in the playoffs.

    2. Morey's flipping of assets makes it hard for us fans to root for a team. It takes the human side of sports fandom out of the fun. I know relatively few posters articulate this second criticism. I am one of the more vocal ones in this category. But I suspect that a lot of those who do not worship Morey have this in the back of their minds.

This second category has little to do with whether we are winning. It's just a matter of preference. There is nothing you can argue against of for it. And it is not related to intelligence, as some posters somehow believe that whoever criticize Morey must be stupid.

Sounds good to me! But dammit, it seems like most of the board say
    "Cuban>Alexander
    Morey sux
    McFail
    Bev sux
    Ariza sux
    trade Jones!"
I'm sure I'm forgetting someone who sux.

Generally posters here are eager to dump players and fire people. And then they condemn Morey for treating players like "assets."

    NO. No, it wasn't.

The downside of the amazing 94-95 season is that after that, we thought we always had a chance at winning the championship, even if we were 6th seed. The board was generally optimistic, and we were still making noise in the playoffs so there wasn't a ton to complain about. (For reference, I don't believe Clutch had a forum until 97, and then rebooted in 99 when he got a new domain.)

Then Hakeem and Clyde declined, we traded Hakeem to Toronto, traded Dickerson for Steve Franchise and thought we were in the new era, but had only begun our long trek on the treadmill. A few years of no playoffs was enough for the whiners to really find their voices.

But it wasn't simply that. To me, it's almost as if the evolution of this BBS mirrored the evolution of dialogue on the internet in general (man, this forum has been around a long time.) Back in 99, "troll" wasn't a verb. Using the anonymity of the net to be a big b*tch hand't quite caught on. I remember in the Franchise/Cat era (post-Pippen) Heypartner posted pretty often then; there were threads that were specifically about the "sunshine asses" vs the Debbie Downers.

Different people come here for different reasons; a variety of needs are met here. There is a not insignificant population here that are whiny drama queens. They have a deep need to voice their displeasure, and they are always displeased. This forum fulfills that need for them. You could, for example, be a fan of a basketball team that has the fourth best record in the league, third best in the stacked west, all in spite of losing their starting 4 and 5 for significant periods, but still come in here day after day to do nothing but complain about how horrible things are.

In the nascent days of this forum, that population was zero. [plaintive sigh]

Now that I remind myself how much time I've spent here, I need to go make a donation to Clutch. If you've spent much time here, I urge you to do the same.

I don't dislike Morey and Mchale is a great guy and an ok ish coach. At this point it doesn't matter because Mchale's not going anywhere. 1 star thread.

2.5 games behind #2 seed in west.

Maori and MilkFail are bumbling and stumbling their way to the top.

Chemistry destroying moves, not running any plays, refusing to trade for stars like Mo Williams, letting Dwight hijack the offense. Its incredible how lucky they are.

Les is a cheap owner who refuses to pay luxury tax and only worries about his Chinese business investments.

Morey is only interested in flipping assets to keep his pipe dreams alive and will never understand the value of true team chemistry.

McHale wouldn't know a playbook if it hit him in the face, and yet he is paradoxically too stubborn to understand the value of going with the hot hand in the game.

Beverley is Rafer Alston without the dribbling ability.

Howard is more interested in making friends and grabbing crotches than being serious about winning.

Why can't we have all of them?

For what it's worth. CF changed as the general internet changed; it was inevitable. CF is still the best in the business. '96 was a much different time than '15.

Morey is great, and McHale is doing a good job this year, at least.

What's wrong with refusing to pay luxury tax? Unless the GM wants to add a great player to an already great team, I'd think the GM incompetent. Remember this argument : no, you can't have a pet alligator, young man, you never took care of your ferret!

I think if Morey valued better coaching the team would be even better.

You make everything seem so black and white when there are so many shades of grey.

    Nothing is that simple ....

I could give a hundred examples but it would fall on deaf ears.

morey didnt know ariza was gonna shoot bricks, and bev was gonna peak in december, and howard was gonna play half a season. yet he's still done a great job this season, esp with the smith/brewer/priggs trades.

mchale still doesnt know his x's and o's. he'd make a great lead assistant coach but not head coach. i was ok with keeping him for this season but then he gets extended for 3 more years.

I would love to hear at least a hundred of your examples.
