If there aren't fights in the pickup basketball games you're playing in, you obviously are playing with lower talented players and need to step up your game.
I've been jumped at the UH rec center. Was doing Olajuwon blocks on a couple of dudes and was talking sht to them. I was young, hyped... and the court is supposed to be where the trash talking happens, right? Coming back up the court the guy I blocked grabbed me in a headlock and two of his friends jumped in and pounded on me. Unfortunately the one guy I was with just stood there and watched, occasionally telling them to stop. Didn't last too long and with the adrenalin it didn't hurt. But I left after that and had to blow off my bruises when my mom asked.
Pretty much or at least some serious trash talk and hard ass fouls. Hard ass fouls are really the test. If you take a hard ass foul and back down then that's blood in the water. The court is like any place in life. Stand up for yourself and more than likely you'll have beers in the parking lot and not fights.
This is all good points. From the dawn of basketball, nothing proves you are the superior basketball player then fighting on the court.
Until standing up for yourself (keeping it real) with the wrong opponent goes wrong and you find that they got to the parking lot before you did and it wasn't to go get some beers.
I remember someone wielded a gun at Lifetime (or just outside the front door) in Sugar Land one time after a heated pick up game. It was a couple years ago. Did anyone from SL hear about this too? Come on, son.
This reminds of something back that happened to my friend Kyle back in high school. Dude could ball, and he was being watched by several college scouts. Every year they had this tournament at one of the local courts with teams sponsored by coaches, businesses, and random people around the neighborhood. Some of the randoms that sponsored were pretty bad guys too. Drug dealers, hustlers, that type. Hyle was going to play in the tournament on his high school coach's team until this cat we knew named Bugaloo convinced him to go to some club and talk to this big time dope boy named Birdie. Kyle bought into all of Birde's hype and decided to ditch his coaches team and play for him. Big mistake. And Kyle's mom's ex knew it. We called him Shep, he was a security guard at our high school. Shep was a hooper back in the day too, and hap a reputation in the hood. But his playing days were behind him. Anyway, Shep started dating Kyle's mom again and he tried to steer him in the right direction but Kyle was so stubborn. At one point Kyle beat this homeless guy named Flip in a game of one on one and beat him up after Flip didn't take his Boonks like a man. This is really a long story, but it all ended with Shep making a comeback at the tournament and schooling fools on the court. Things got crazy and a guy ended up getting shot.
most of the time they get borken up before they happen.....but Ive been in a pickup bball fight, **** got real inside the gym, everyone got kicked out, fought outside, everyone went home. the end
I've been there in a few fights. In the worst case, the cops were called in but we simply talked it out. Nothing happened after that.

I've seen it. Been in a situation where a guy went to grab a gun, but he was talked down because, "its just a pick up game, dude." More recently, some pushing and shoving broke out between some guys, and myself and all the other players had them do a one minute boxing match. Settled them right out. Sometimes that sort of thing is alright. Its just when you have somebody who goes overboard and takes things too seriously.
I was born and raised in west Philadelphia and we would always hang out after school and shoot some b-ball. Then one day a couple of guys started making trouble, I got into one little fight and my mom got scared and said "you're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air"
to answer your question, yes - there is no reason people couldn't get charged just because it is during a pick up game. But, if both parties are fighting it is typically a class C misdemeanor for disorderly conduct (in Texas anyways). Assaults are supposed to be one way (i.e one guy gets struck and doesn't strike back). There is a difference between self defense and having a fight. But at the end of the day, if no one calls the cops no one is going to get charged with anything.
