Except I think most believe that "Continue to add important pieces without mortgaging your team's future." is putting together a team for this year and next, which has no chance of winning a championship. So that #2 is vastly different from the OP where you are a legitimate contender.

And I would ALWAYS take your #1 scenario.

Championship, Houston has basically had teams that were good in regards to regular season, and fell flat in playoffs (since forever), so option 2 isn't much more of a stretch. So go championship all the way, even if it ruins next several years. Haha, we basically have had that since 97...

my thoughts exactly. its a terrible way to run a franchise. What happens if they finally top out and get the #1 pick and suddenly he goes down with an injury, do they tank again? What if three years into Okafor's career, they find themselves unable to sign any legit superstars to play alongside him, do they once again tank to get a higher pick? this isn't hyperbole, I think it's actual realistic scenarios given what we've seen from them.

^Also windows are small, so you win when you can... It seems like the Rockets teams have been good enough to keep most fans interested, but bad enough/injured enough to not go anywhere each year.

This poll would make more sense in a mlb forum. The Braves between 95 and 2005 is pretty much your option #2. The closes in the NBA I can think of is the Nets from 2001 to 2007.

Except they're playing in the East, and 1 injured blue chip prospect out of 3 still lands them in the playoffs.

The 76ers is choosing neither option. They're just stacking the odds in hopes of reproducing what the Thunder reaped after drafting 4 excellent starters .

If you enjoy to be a second placed loser, you have a problem.

A high percentage chance over decent ball.... Doesn't even have to be guaranteed

Why not just change the poll to be:

    1) Have incredible sex for a year with a hot blonde
    OR
    2) Or jacking off to your favorite p*rn for 8 years

Seems like the same comparison to me.

80% of those responding to this poll lied. If the Rockets won once then had 8 years of no playoffs then the fanbase would go nuts calling for everyone's head.

Also, to make my point, this franchise has never had more than 5 consecutive years without playoffs ever....and they were still in San Diego to start that losing streak. We recently had 3 seasons without playoffs and people were acting like the Rockets were the worst franchise in the NBA as a result. I would refuse to speak to any other Rockets fan if they ever went 8 years without playoffs because the level of stupid would be unbearable.

if you have to be the best to find happiness, you have a problem. This whole "if you're not first, you're last" stuff is a really messed up way to look at sports and life in general.

    Basically ...

    Group 1 Teams:

Florida Marlins (1997-present) 2 World Series victories
Detroit Pistons (2000-present) 1 NBA championship
Miami Hurricanes (2000-present) 1 National championship and a hurricane of scandals.

    vs.

    Group 2 Teams:

    Buffalo Bills (1989 - 1999)
    Philadelphia Eagles (2000-2010)
    Atlanta Braves (1991 - 2005) Sans for 1995 championship, 14 division titles
    Utah Jazz (1988-2003), Phoenix Suns (1988 - 2000, 2003-2010)

Group 1 Teams, definitely. I'll take 16 years of futility for 2 championships versus 16 years consecutive winning, but no championship trophies.

A decade of deep playoff runs is 10 chances at a championship and since there are no guarantees on a championship I will take 10 chances over 2.

    I am with this.

Maybe it's just me. The process is more fun than the result. I'd rather my team be competing on a high level every year, than winning it all one year and than being irrelevant in other years.

There's no such thing as a guaranteed championship. At least not in this day and age, especially when you have to fight through the west.
