Can someone please explain the likelihood of resigning all 3 of these players in the offseason. I've seen a few posters state that we can only bring back 1 of them, and other say that Smith and Brewer will be likely gone. What is the real reason for this?
The Rockets hold Brewers bird rights , they don't have Smith's .... Unless Brewer is asking for a huge deal , I don't see why he wouldn't be brought back since they will be operating well over the cap. The real questions are about Smith and McDaniels .... How much does it take to sign each one and can they both be had for the MLE ?! If not , its one or the other. I don't think Smith will be hard to resign since Detroit is still paying him and unless it's a really large deal , his bottom line doesn't change a whole lot. No clue what McDaniels will be seeking .... Total wildcard.
Brewer may very well come back but Smith is the more likely IMO. With everything thats happened and him finding a new home with the Rockets and playing with his best friend (Dwight) AND getting paid anyways by the Pistons regardless of what the Rockets offer......seems like a no brainer for him to return. I could see the MLE offered and him coming back easily
For smith it's because we don't have his bird rights and assuming we don't have cap space as well as chose to operate above the cap, all we'd have to offer a UFA is the MLE. I'm still not clear the KJ's status after this year (if he'll be a UFA or RFA) but I don't think we have bird rights on him to just go over the cap to resign him.
If you give Smith the full MLE you don't have a penny left to keep McDaniels. You have tree choices: 1) Sign both Smith & McDaniels for some amount of the MLE between them. 2) Get under the cap to sign one then use the MLE on the other BUT this would mean giving up the bird rights to Terry , Brewer & PatBev. Now what ?! 3) Let one or both walk using all or part of the MLE to sign the other or someone else. This offseason Morey will earn his paycheck .... Some tough decisions ahead.
On a tangent, doubt smith would be picked up by any other team because of chemistry issues. He needs a players coach and support from howard to keep his head in the game and be accepted. I would think he will stay.
In the case of McDaniels , he will be a restricted free agent and the Rockets have the right to match any offer but do not have bird rights so they must do so with cap space (Or an exception). They will have the MLE and wont have the BAE (Bi-Annual Exception) to work with in the coming offseason.
The only one I don't see coming back is McDaniels. Smith has found his home here. We are embracing him. Look how much his name got dragged through the mud this year - and Houston gambled on him and it's paying off. I think he gladly doesn't take a huge offer and stays here. Brewer loves Houston. I don't think there's even a parallel universe somewhere where Morey doesn't match the offer for Brewer. Those two are vets who know they've found a solid situation here in Houston where they're appreciated and know they can contribute to a potential contender. McDaniels is a rookie looking to get paid. I see him taking the biggest offer available.
if smith will sign for cheap then why the hell not brewer or mcd im fine with etiher 2/3 of them should come back. hopefuly morey doesnt go cheap this offseason and forgets about role players
The whole KJ pickup to me is so odd. Like why get him at all if he's just a rental, it's not like there are many minutes for him now
Brewer and Smith should both come back since we have bird rights on one and MLE for the other. However, I have a question about McDaniels... We likely won't have any money left over to sign him, but since hes a RFA and we can match any offer another team gives him, does that mean we can match that offer regardless of cap availability?
