Rockets not doing jack. If they were you'd see Nick JOhnson of Capella called up cause they'll need bodies as players who get traded go through health checks and what not.
Sometimes we make trades just to make trades. The Jordan Hamilton for Brooks move last tradeline being a perfect example. What we could do with AB right now.
In a way, DD is right. No one likes the excessive movement of players who have been with the team, but he tends to overrate some of them too. Johnson is a year away from contributing to the team. Canaan can do better than him now, but he cannot be relied upon to be a big contributor this year. Nevertheless, he does have some upside. He needs to play well. We are in real need of PG help. Bev and Terry can't get the job done by themselves.
Guilty as charged, but I would bet you would have said the same thing about Sam Cassell over Scottie Brooks? Sometimes you just got to play the young guys and live with them learning. Look at DMO - he could have busted out last year if he got consistent playing time, hell he would still be on the bench if Tjones didn't get injured..... The only thing I like about today is that Clutch can get a lot of extra clicks, he deserves it - this place is rock solid and can handle enormous traffic these days. DD
@ DaDakota You do realize that any significant improvement expected for next season essentially happens today because they cant create cap space while several assets expire. Terry , Shved & Smith's contracts expire at the end of the season and the team is still ~$1.7m over the cap. Brewer has a player option , if he opts out you are $2.99m under the cap with the above expirations. Given those expiring contracts , loss of talent & small amount of cap space to replace them with .... How do you improve the talent on this roster for next season? At worst , you need to extend those options into next year by moving what parts you can for players who's contracts are similar in size yet expire one year later.
Do you not love James Harden and Dwight Howard more??? Morey did what he did for the greater good. Its revisionist history to gripe about lesser players not getting developed with the Rockets. They did what they did knowing they would let good (not GREAT) players develop & take further steps elsewhere. And yes, I do NOT think Dragic is a GREAT player. He is really, really good, but let's not act like the 2013/14 Goran Dragic is who is has been his entire career and more importantly... who he would be with the Rockets beyond 2015. Much less what he would be for the Rockets in 2017 - 2019.... oh ... ON 20mil+ per year contract! ...... That being said I definitely DO NOT want any of the Rockets young talents (D-Mo, Jones, Capela, and maybe even Canaan/Johnson) traded just to be traded. I want to see these types of players (and maybe the likely lotto pick from the Pelles) grown along with Harden & Dwight for the next few years. That doesn't mean that its not a good idea to at least explore trades for pieces like Shved, and maybe Papanikolaou who are not in the rotation or in the Rockets long term plans. I see no reason for the Rockets to not explore deals, but no I do NOT want them giving up young talent for no reason.
No doubt playing D-Mo was a blessing for us. Canaan isn't ready yet, and Johnson is even further away from him. I do think next season, could be a big year for Canaan. We need more help now. That's all I am trying to say.
Canaan looked ready as a starter when Bev was hurt - he played great even against players like Chris Paul. Canaan is ready, he just needs a consistent run - and having Jason dinosaur Terry ahead of him is hurting this team. Canaan can do everything Terry can do, and stay in front of his man on D. DD
I agree with you DD about having our younger guys get some run to see what they can really do, from a contribution standpoint. But as you specifically mentioned about Rudy T (being willing to play those younger guys during his coaching tenure), McHale has shown a real unwillingness to play those younger guys "consistently" outside of "garbage time" (the only exception was Parsons as a rookie because he played defense that rookie season; and the only reason Canaan was playing earlier this season is that Bev was hurt at that time). Again, I do agree with you about having the younger guys contribute (especially Canaan, because of how well he played and ran the offense, meaning that Harden didn't have to do too much during that time) but I do also understand why many people feel why a trade should be made to bring in someone with some experience to help bolster our roster for a potential playoff run.
I trust Morey infinitely more than any armchair GM's on this site. If he thinks we are not contenders yet with our core, then I believe him 100%. There is ZERO point in developing chemistry and young players before we have a core that can contend going forward.
I like Morey too - but he has let guys like Dragic go, let Brooks go a few times, let Lowry go, let Whiteside go - let Patterson go - I mean he is not infallible in his evaluation of talent. None of us are - I will cheer for whatever incarnation this team ends up being clearly and for Morey too - but I am tired of flipping when I think we have some young players that are REAL players in this league and need to develop with them. Harden is only 25 years old, we have time. DD
Pls do not talk like that about Dragic. He is a Phoenix Sun in his heart, drafted there and played most of his career there. I really dislike him but I can tolerate him on this team. He was here only for 1 year. Now he turned against his own team (Phoenix). I am not saying he is a bad guy, just not all that great. People were saying he was better than Lowry back then and look who started in the Allstar game. Dragic or Lowry?
you do realize a 1st round pick is essentially a player, that if you trade it would just be for another player. and if you ad to the pick someone that doesnt play right now, and all together it is an upgrade at backup center for instance.
I'm confused. The Rockets are trying to trade non-rotation guys (maybe one bench guy Terry for salary matching) and draft picks for a starter. If the Rockets get another Harden, great. If the Rockets add a starting PG to Harden, Dwight, Motiejunas, Jones, Smith, Ariza, Brewer, and Beverley, I can't see how a fan would be upset as the core would be intact. Edit: I do think Canaan should be kept. Wouldn't be surprised to see Beverley traded to open up some PT.
Canaan has struggled since he got hurt. He lacks confidence, we do need him to play well. I do agree, that consistent minutes should be helpful for the team.
