That's because no one else was willing to give him the 4th yr player option. It was the best contract that he could get.
Why??? He would have an opportunity to play for a contender this year and get his money next year elsewhere if he doesn't want to stay in Houston. It's a win-win for him IMO.

Maybe Ainge thinks he can pull off another Garnett/Allen offseason soon and he wants Dragic there for when that happens. It's a gamble, but I can understand his confidence in thinking he could get it done. What I don't get is why Dragic would want to stay in Boston. Why waste away his prime on a team that could be mired in lotto land for the next few years? Unless he really doesn't care about rings, that seems like a potentially horrible situation for him.
