Grow some balls!! You can't partly agree with what he said. You either agree or disagree because He only really said one thing. And if you agree, you're probably ignorant when it comes to analytics.
I wonder why Ted Turner's goons haven't spoken to Barkley to tone it down a bit? His Rockets hate is not only obvious but he reveals that he doesn't even watch games he supposed analyzing at times.
I'm not really just talking about this incident but as a whole. Earlier in the year the gynecologist comment, etc. I know Morey is very personable on social media and that's a big part of why he is visible and liked by the fan base but it just appears sometimes it's attention seeking to me. But these are different times with the age of social media. As a high ranking exec in a sports organization, he just needs to be careful. Social media tends to get people in trouble and that's what could possibly happen if Morey doesn't use more discretion.
Stupid people trying to pretend that being stupid is cool... No wonder we'll all be speaking Mandrin in 100 years. If Basketball wasn't a thing, Chuck, the only question you'd ever ask that anybody would listen to would have been, "Would you like fries with that?" Acting like you are superior because you won the genetic lottery is hilarious. Also, Chuck lecturing anybody on either defense or winning championships like he's ever done either is ironic in the least. How pathetic is it that a fifty year old man is still trying to talk smack about the chicks he got in high school?
Did you actually read what I posted or your just arguing with me because my opinion is different? He said analytics is useless! If you agree then you think it's USELESS.
Trying to argue against people who defend Barkley’s “analytics are useless and never wins” reminds of talks with my grandmother. Among others, she has said that weed kills people because it’s a drug and she has heard stories of drugs killing people, and that because fatter people drink more water, water makes people fat. Sometimes, it’s better to just nod along rather than appeal to logic. I know my relationship with my grandmother has gotten better once I realized this fact. Same with people like Chuck and others who think ideas like “corner 3s are good shots because they’re short” is an evil lie propagated by those who don’t play basketball.
He's one of the most well-known GMs in the NBA. If he wanted to be noticed, he could do it in many other ways than a relatively harmless joke on Twitter.
[rQUOTEr]Rockets GM Daryl Morey is a staunch supporter of advanced statistics. Charles Barkley thinks he’s an idiot. Mavs owner Mark Cuban, who has never been afraid of bringing innovative ideas to the NBA, sits somewhere in the middle. “You use analytics as a way to identify guys,” said Cuban with Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan, “and you use the eye test as a way to confirm or not confirm that they can be of value to your team.” Cuban, who believes Barkley is “half right” in his criticism of advanced stats, has seen the value and danger of trusting statistics in making personnel decisions. Stats and actually watching players can’t be separated. They go “hand-in-hand.” “We went out and signed Evan Eschmeyer because of stats and analytics, and that didn’t quite work out the way we wanted it to,” admitted Cuban. “It helped us come back from a 2-0 deficit against Houston in the playoffs, where we adjusted our lineups based on what the numbers said. And putting JJ in the mix in our championship run — that also had a lot to do with analytics and numbers.” The biggest problem with using statistics in today’s NBA — everyone is doing it. Cuban says that many “old school” owners have sold their franchises to younger, “hedge fund” type guys. As a result, more and more teams are enlisting data-driven GMs to make decisions. “When a couple of teams are using it, you can get an advantage. When everybody is using it, your advantage is pretty much gone. That’s where analytics has gotten to now, where pretty much every NBA team uses analytics — at least some degree.” The Mavs signing of Monta Ellis two years back was seen by many as a poor move, as Ellis has never excelled through the advanced stats filter. At the same time, Ellis had never been surrounded by the same talent and coaching staff that Dallas had to offer. “It didn’t really matter what the analytics were, because we knew that we could make him better,” said Cuban. “It was the same thing when we picked up DeSean Stevenson and put him in the lineup.” Cuban, who sees both side of the stats debate, is unwilling to thrust himself into the Morey-Barkley battle — despite his previous history with Morey. Barkley went on a rant Tuesday night, calling Morey “one of those idiots who believes in analytics.” “I like Daryl. I actually get along great with him personally,” said Cuban. “I’m sure he looks at some of the things I do and shakes his head, and I look at some of the social media things that Daryl does and shake my head. Everybody has a feel for different things. Daryl’s strength is not on social media.” And regarding Barkley — an 11-time All Star, former league MVP, and Hall of Fame member — could he be a successful GM in the NBA? “I think Charles, with the right people around him, would be great,” said Cuban. “Charles just trying to do it on his own — would be horrible. Just like any singular person trying to do it own their own would be horrible.” http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2015/02/12/mark-cuban-barkley-is-half-way-right-with-stats-criticism/[/rQUOTEr]
Why is Mark Cuban any more of an expert on this matter than DM, Charles Barkley, or anyone else that's been around basketball for a while? Why is Cuban characterized as in the middle while DM is characterized as hardly analytic-only? DM has never said he relies solely on analytics. The only one being extremely polarizing in this whole thing is Barkley, who is entertainment.
This situation being characterized as either/or is just stupid. I don't know why this keeps getting perpetuated. It is not like Morey has his head shoved in spreadsheets and doesn't look at talent. It really comes down to "information." Extra information. Your choices are 1) Eye test 2) Eye test + analytics Morey chooses more information, not less. Barkley chooses less information.
This. Morey has always said that analytics is not everything. I don't know why people keep putting him in the extreme. Whenever people blindly criticize analytics, like Barkley did, I always bring up Tom Landry. Landry was the pioneer in using the computer to aid his football coaching back in the early 70s. Some traditionalists criticized him for taking the "heart" out from football. Now nobody even imagine how you coach football without computers. And nobody ever thinks Landry as some cold-hearted nerd.
Off topic here but why does Cuban constantly bring up Morey's use of social media? It's like he can't come up with a legitimate criticism so he made up one that is so vague he will never need to explain it.
