I agree, I don't understand how someone like tall can come in and complain about this being news because "it happens everyday".

You could say that about 95% of crimes .

Still not a safe assumption that it couldn't have been something that simple though. It was maybe a month ago that I remember a story about a man being shot to death outside of a WalMart because of a dispute over the checkout line. A few years ago I remember a man being chased down for blocks and shot multiple times over cutting someone off in traffic. Sometimes people are just crazy. That said, his motivation really shouldn't matter, he murdered 3 innocent people, he should rot in prison for the rest of his life or get the needle for it.

I largely agree with you but we need to be very very careful with this case. From what I've heard there is certainly evidence that this suspect had very anti-religious feelings but I agree that at the moment I can't tell if in this case this was particularly anti-Muslim, religion in general or if this truly was just about a parking space. Given that people are already drawing their political lines and conclusions I think we need to be careful about using this case as a cudgel for ideological arguments. This goes far beyond just Clutchfans but also how this is perceived in the rest of the World.

Like it or not the radicals and demagogues around the world are around the world are watching our news and something like this could be more rhetorical ammo for those who see this as a war between the West and Islam.

I agree with what you said towards the end, but remember, context is everything. I'm sure a dental student and his wife who spend summers helping refugees receive free dental care (who also stick out like sore thumbs with head scarfs) were killed execution style by some dude who "just happens to hate muslims" because he was genuinely angry about a parking spot. If he turned himself in, I don't understand what sort of evidence backs up the claim the chappel hill police are pushing.

Anyways, I don't want to derail the thread, just wanted to make note of Tallanvor's distasteful comment.

    RIP.

Saying that he "hates Muslims" is disingenuous though, he didn't "hate" Muslims particularly, he disliked ALL religions. Also, the only evidence that he hated religion is from Facebook posts promoting atheism or "anti-theism" and speaking out against all religions....that's hardly enough to assume that he was out targeting Muslims. Again, he spoke out a lot against Christianity....would we make this assumption if he shot 3 white Christians that still had the weird ash cross thing they do on Ash Wednesday? Probably not, we'd just assume it was a crazy person pissed off about a parking spot.

'I wanted to attack Muslims but I couldn't find any'.

    That's a pretty awful argument.

And that's irrelevant if you understood my point.

    what damage?

Are we really to the point where we're going to analyze every murderer's political beliefs (via social media) just so we can say "GOTCHA!" to the other side?

Sad story but from the initial reports it doesn't sound like hate crime.

Isn't that sort of why this was branded a hate crime in the first place? They analyzed the murderer's social media and saw that he was an atheist that spoke out against Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, thus he killed those three people because they were Muslims. As far as I know, there wasn't anything else suggesting that was a factor. I mean maybe if he yelled out "Science be praised!" as he was doing it then it would be easier to make that assumption.

Ah, didn't know they were neighbors, that sort of changes things....but not really the guy should still spend the rest of his life in prison or be put to death.

People need to chill in this thread and let some dust settle. It's a terrible tragedy, and rushing to judgement isn't making meaning out of it.

I reflexively thought this was the ugly sister of "internet activism", but this has been festering in cable media before interweb dominance.

Why are ****tards allowed to spew ugliness in public company like their crass opinions matter?

Forgot to add this from the article in my previous post. The murderer's wife on the situation:

    http://www.newsobserver.com/2015/02/11/4547742_chapel-hill-police-arrest-man.html?rh=1

I wonder what kind of parking they have in the neighborhood that this guy is getting into it with various neighbors.

So he shot a husband/wife and the husband's sister in the head? Yea, sorry that doesn't add up . I don't blame the wife though, you can't expect a spouse to say anything that would lengthen or increase the severity of his sentence.

Why would that lengthen or increase the severity of his sentence? It's triple murder, and the parking dispute makes it seem like it was premeditated so there's a virtual certainty that they'll seek the death penalty.
