You want specifics? Here they are. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2GJ2PwXQ4E You're doing this to yourself. As we all remember, right before this play occurs Harden has Beverley and Parsons switch defensive assignments. MCHALE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ANY SAY AS TO WHO HIS PLAYERS WOULD BE GUARDING! McHale also said something to the effect of..."He just made a hell of a shot." The worst defense I've ever seen in my entire life is Terrence Jones on this play. You HAVE to make that inbounds pass difficult. Jones should be in front of Batum following his eyes and making that pass as tough as possible. Instead, Batum telegraphs a chest pass to Lillard for the game winner. Jones obviously wasn't even told how to defend that play. You can even see JB motioning out to Jones to try to get him to realize that he has to cover the inbounder. McHale is oblivious to the whole thing. I apologize for humiliating you like this on a public forum, but like I said, you're doing this to yourself. You are in a pretty big hole already. Stop digging.
I like McHale, I really do... but the dude is just too stupid to manage a game... Can we give him some honorary position... asst GM? where he can be a figurehead, work with the bigs in practice, be a recruiter... but leave the x's, o's and adjustments to somebody who knows what they are doing...
Three specifics. No Harden/Howard pick and rolls. I saw one the entire game and it resulted in an easy basket. No DMo post ups. I literally didn't see one. While GS had DMo chasing Green on the perimeter, McHale did nothing to exploit that match up on the other end. Finally, no picks to get Harden free from Thompson. Thompson is one of the few players in the NBA that can guard Harden straight up. Harden threw all his little tricks and moves at Thompson and nothing. It was Portland all over again. Nothing was done to free up Harden or to help him get easy shots. Good coaching puts players in position to succeed. When your player is struggling, YOU TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT to get him loose from the defense. You don't keep running the same stupid ISO ball plays that you've been running all game long. Defensively the paint was a sieve. They were getting whatever they wanted all game long. No pressure on the ball handlers, hell no pressure on anyone. The Rockets aren't balanced by design. That's the whole point of Morey's offensive philosophy. Newsflash, Moreyball will get you a bunch of wins during the regular season but coaching helps get you the important wins when it matters.
This is right on the money. Coaching can only do so much. Our players are the ones playing the game and need to also figure ways to react. The amount of assists we got tonight was also horrendous. The ball got sticky and no one could get anything going. This is where we need a leader on the court. Back then we had Kenny Smith and Elie. Parsons was slowly developing into that role. Players need to speak up and step up.
Coaching can only do so much? How much have they done if they cant get through to the players? You seem to think theyve done all they can. So since they have done all they can and they still cant get through to the players doesnt that make them useless?
We lose a game and poof here come the fire McHale crowd. GS just lost to the Thunder so we all knew they would come after us this game. We lost to the Magic and thumped the Thunder. Yeah the coach makes mistakes - all coaches do. Just so reactionary.
Whatever one's thoughts of McHale the fact remains he has never given off a vibe of being a strong "Xs and Os" guy and this leaves him vulnerable to a lot of criticism when things turn south. And when an uber "Xs and Os" guy like SVG is now 10-2 since Josh Smith left it doesn't help McHale's case.
I wonder what a coach has to do to make Howard play p&r. What a waste of talent...That's why I don't believe Howard when he says he wants to win. Yes, you want to win on your terms, which won't happen, so...
this is not a mistake or two that you make sometimes...how can you not post up dmo 10-15 times every game? its not a mistake you make occasionaly... you do it every single night... you are not going to your most automatic and most efficeint play... if not the most eficient play then at least 2nd most efficient option on offense as stated by Morey
The McHale hate isn't just kneejerking. These are issues that have been consistent throughout the season, we beat a lot of teams based on talent alone, but when we play a well coached team we get exploited. It was the same last year in the playoffs. The Rockets' are easily exploited by cutting off Harden, packing the paint against him and letting Dwight beat you 1 on 1. Guys probably see Dwight's success in the post as an advantage and keep going to him, but he just doesn't convert enough to beat a team on his own. The only way to beat a defense like that, is to have a counter, make adjustments, try something new. Run plays to free up Harden, run pick and rolls with Dwight, post up DMo, have Ariza and Brewer cut hard towards the basket. You won't beat it by doing the same thing over and over again, that's just playing into their hands.
Agree with everything ^^ How does Curry always get open and easy buckets when Harden can barely get his hands on the ball sometimes? Is that not coaching? Is it because Warriors have Thompson as a 2nd -Curry?
It's so ****ing simple. They accept their roles and play to their strenghts. We don't want to hurt Dwert's feelings so we don't.
the rockets are extremely talented, they are very big, they are very deep and they have superstar players on the team and they have a solid MVP candidate. this is absolutely all down to mchale. you could not ask for better players. its time the front office stopped feeling sorry for mchale for what happened a few years ago. He is not a good coach, period. If you want results get a proper coach.
I totally absolutely agree! If the coach asked him to be the ultimate garbage man player he would probably get McHale fired... Heeey did I just st find a solutions to our problem?
I agree with everything in this post. Just to add on to what you said...If we are running the same damn iso sets game after game, it becomes extremely easy for a well coached team to prepare for us. When I watch the Rockets play offense, I see several possessions where most of the defense doesn't even have to MOVE. We are extremely predictable and give the defense way too many plays off. It's just 9 guys out there watching Harden dribble it around at the top of the key. BALL MOVEMENT! San Antonio nearly swept superior talent with it.
All of you are a bunch of idiots. You praise Mchale when they win, but you bash him immediately when they lose. You are all a bunch of morons. STFU and appreciate they are a 28-13 team and not a 12-29 team. Appreciate they are competing and are in the playoff hunt. You f___ing morons are sicken me with your butt hurt whining you dumb, idiot, MF's. And yes i'm targeting all you f___ing idiots on this thread. And you too.
Some more stats that I find absolutely alarming... We have outscored our opponents by a total of 166 points on the season. We average 21 assists per game. Opponents average 21.3 assists per game AGAINST us! If that doesn't make anyone see the light that this team NEEDS more ball movement I don't know what will. Let's compare our assists per game with some of the top teams in the West. Golden State averages 27, Portland 22.7, Memphis 22.6, Dallas 23.6, LAC 24.6, San Antonio 24.6. Team assist to turnover ratio...Philadelphia is last (30) in the league at 1.12. The Rockets are second to last (29) at 1.27. So like I've been saying...this staff emphasizes little to no ball movement and turnovers. We are winning on talent alone and this style of play will not get it done against well coached teams in the playoffs.
