Dwight needs to stop shooting hooks. I've checked his stats and this is what I found: I love Dwight's defense, rebounding, rim protection. He does so many things to help this team win game. But he needs to recognize that he has to finish strong near the rim. He doesn't have a great shooting touch to be utilizing hooks, bank shots etc. I assume it's not only the shooting touch that's contributing to these poor percentages - it's also the fact that he's not a great post-up player and when he tries to post-up he simply doesn't put himself into a high-percentage shot opportunities, has to take difficult shots.
Dwight last season (2013-14): Driving Bank Hook Shot 1/1 Driving Hook Shot 4/4 Hook Bank Shot 5/7 Hook Shot 31/82 Jump Bank Hook Shot 3/3 Jump Hook Shot 15/24 Running Hook Shot 10/26 Turnaround Bank Hook Shot 10/13 Turnaround Hook Shot 19/50 Overall: 98/210 - 46.6%
Same data, sorry... Thank you. That 60% from Dmo seems unsustainable to me. What is the source? Would like to see a little bit about the Gasol's, Cousins...
I just hate when he does that stupid over his shoulder left hand hook which goes over the goal and starts fast breaks for the other team.
The Overrated Center In The House. He should have that jump hook down to a science. He is who he is. Concentrate on DEFENSE Dwight.
This doesn't take into account how many turnovers per possession on those shots either. It feels like 10% in Howard's case.
I was just about to post some stats on DH's post ups but this is far more detailed. Are you able to pull the data for playoff performances only? Where did you get the info by the way? on the subject, i expect bad things when dwight posts up. these numbers back up what everyone can see with the eye test. He shouldn't be posting up (particular with that turn around hook, or any hook shot for that matter). If he turns baseline, pushes his man out to create space and banks it in for a layup or dunk that's fine. Those hook shots though.....man. He's been sucking at it since he's been in the league. Does anyone think it registers in his head he just sucks at it? Why on earth does he keep doing it? If he only decides to really focus and put forth the effort in the post season just don't do it in the regular season then....
I just went to each players profile page on NBA.com then went to Stats. Another page opens. Go to Stats > Shooting Stats and you'll find percentages for each way the player has scored in the season. There are filters too (for previous season, for playoffs, home, road etc.)
This probably doesn't take into account the turnovers either when he posts up and gets hacked or stripped. If you added those as attempts it'd be even lower I bet.
Dwight Howard has never been a skilled post player, but in Orlando he was a much more effective one. He was able to use his strength to get good position, and then his length and explosion allowed him to get very close shots, even with his poor touch he made a lot of them. We can still see that on occasion here, we saw it in the playoffs last year, but for the most part he has been incapable of replicating it since he left Orlando. He still thinks he can be the guy he was.
