A self-aware sybian would either be the most happy, or most angry creature in all the universe.

I wonder whose acting will be the worst: Chappie, Die Antwoord #1, or Die Antwoord #2?

I like the look of this better than the earlier look actually.

I'm looking forward to this, but I'm starting to see a pattern in Blomkamp's plots: Underdog protagonist fighting for his life, sadistic uber-evil antagonist chasing him.

... super-boring gunplay. Seriously, when can we move past long, meaningless fire fights in action movies. The hero is never going to get seriously hurt, outside of Robocop.

Never. A well executed gunfight can be a thing of beauty. This trailer looks much better than the first, so I'll remain cautiously excited. Blomkamp has a nice visual sense, even if the story (Elysium) falls a bit short.

    Hmmm, rated R -- I wasn't expecting that.

District 9 and Elysium were both rated R, Blomkamp doesn't seem to like to compromise much.

Well, I agree in terms of some of John Woo's best work, for instance. Those were incredibly creative and tense scenes.

But I'll give you an example: Inception. Fascinating ideas, but to manufacture tension, you had like three dream levels of incredibly boring firefights. (Oh look, these random faceless badguys who can't hit the broadside of a barn... are on snowmobiles. But at least the scene is loud and I'm filling screen time.)

To me, the trailers to this look more like the latter case when the guns come out. It's like a form of bad dialogue, full of cliches. Hide behind wall. bang bang bang. Run across open space. bang bang bang.

Sorry, just a pet peeve. But we agree that gunplay scenes can be incredible.

(check this one starting after the 2:00 mark)

I agree this looks much better than the first trailers and I'm mystified why they made the first ones so cutesy for a rated R action movie.

This is a common theme in sci-fi about the conflict between man and machine and what happens with a thinking machine. This movie sort of turns the idea of Skynet on it's head where the thinking machine is the protagonist while the pro-humans are the antagonist. It looks like the idea the movie is making is that because Chappie can think independently and also is brought up with human experiences it also develops a conscience and can choose to good like protect human lives rather than just be programmed.

This might be an interesting discussion for the D&D "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us" thread about whether AI could actually develop human conscience.
