Basically, if you're unwilling to take a chance on Manning now... you would have been in the exact same (if not more-so) sentiment in 2012 when people had legitimate fears that he could be paralyzed with one bad hit, and yet he was still looking for a sizable salary. Hindsight/revisionist history is really a b****.
The Texans never made him an offer to see if he would have taken less. Not talking about now I'm talking about 2012 (he didn't look like garbage on the field after his last games back then)... And Ricky (the GM) wanted Manning but McNair and Kubiak shot him down. We blame Ricky Smith for a lot of things around here but we may be pointing our fingers at the wrong person.
Manning is 38 years old now. Your potential ceiling back in 2012 was a lot different than it would be now. Not worth it anymore. Betting on Schaub over Manning, though, was dumb back then and still is.
No, there was just reports that he couldn't throw the ball all that well... and there were concerns about the structural integrity of his neck withstanding any sort of hits. Thus, you could easily compare what he is now to what he was then. If you're not willing to take a chance on him now, you can't go back and say you would have taken a chance on him then.... there were more unknowns back then. This was also a team that signed an aging Ed Reed while not attempting to retain an all-pro caliber Glover Quinn... so there is an inconsistent pattern of decision making when taking into account aging/once great players.
He was 36 in 2012 with more unknowns post-surgery... its a very similar situation, and this time, the Texans don't have a for-sure starting QB.
2 years can be a big difference. And some of us weren't set on that 'for sure' starting QB back then either. Regardless, I disagree that it's a similar situation. I don't think it's likely that the reason Kubiak (and McNair, or whoever) passed is because he thought Manning was done, or a risk. Schaub was coming off a his lisfranc, IIRC. I think he decided to stick with Schaub. And he choose poorly.
They said a bird in the hand was better than two in the bush... Schaub's lisfranc was never thought to be possibly career ending like Manning's neck injury, and the team did get out to an 11-1 start (after going 7-3 with him the year before), so nobody at the time ever questioned the short-term decision making (even if you weren't "set on that for-sure" starting QB back then... doubtful anybody here was starting "still should have gotten Manning" threads at 11-1). Manning wouldn't have been thought of as a long-term decision then... and wouldn't be a long-term solution now... still several unknowns with him (but less-so now than before the neck surgery). Yes, 2 years can make a big difference... but at 36 you already were getting Manning with less arm strength, less mobility, and wear-tear injury risk. The only difference was the potential catastrophic neck injury that never happened. So, I stand by that if you're not willing to sign him now... its simply hindsight/revisionist BS that you were willing to sign him then.
I don't view it the same because of the age difference and not being able to throw after surgery is understandable. Ed Reed was obviously a McNair decision. At least we know the move Ricky wanted to make would have worked.
And you also know that what he ultimately wants doesn't usually happen, thus confirming his puppet status Hard to say if it would have guaranteed a SB win.... cite my previous posts regarding that they still would have had the regressing Wade Phillip's defense that fell off a cliff in year 3. But certainly the MVP award and all the record-breaking accolades would have been very possible and would have been nice to be a part of. Also this team may still have retained Kubiak.... so you can't say the move was all terrible as I do feel they have a better overall HC and staff now in place.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/01/12/severity-of-peytons-injury-called-into-question/ DO NOT WANT!!!
I would have rather had a legitimate shot at competing for a championship than sucking to get a head coach from the Belichick tree that usually bears rotten fruit... But that's just me.
I don't think there's any logic in that. Even all things being equal a 36 year old Manning still is more likely to give you a bigger window than a 39 year old Manning. I don't think it's reasonable to believe the approach to Manning this offseason would be the same as 3 years ago. As far as the rest of it...back in 2012 there were plenty of people who believed that you choose Peyton Manning over Matt Schaub there. And 3 years later they are still correct.
So, you don't think 2012 was a legitimate championship shot? You also would have rather they keep Kubiak? Who did you want as a head coach? Also, good to see you've already made your decision/judgement on BOB... despite him leading this team to a winning record with 3 different starting QB's and little-to-no contributions from the 2014 draft class (additionally, he's got a few more skins on the wall than the other Belichick failures... namely paying some dues as a college HC.) Where I come from, that's a pretty damn good coaching job... also, Nick Saban is part of the Belichick tree and he could have pretty much any NFL job he wanted if he decided to leave Bama, so its not all "rotten".
who wouldnt sign manning now? what do the texans have to lose? years of fitzpatrick/savage development? LOL.
But all things were not equal... the 36 year old Manning had a neck condition believed to be career threatening. I'm equating that to the 3 year older Manning that may continue to have some chronic/age-related injuries that hampers his effectiveness (or he heals up and is just as good as the guy who played the first 9 games of this season). Its still a gamble with a possible successful return. Sure there were... just funny how not much was said when they were 11-1 at the time, and we only see chirps about it till after you already know what Manning was able to do (and after we know what Schaub did).
Who didn't know Ricky wanted Manning... That's no secret. And McNair shot it down _ bang bang bang... He even had to come out in the media and say Schaub was our guy.
The people above who are saying "3 years ago, yes... now, no." At least you're consistent. Hell, I'd roll the dice with him now too as it couldn't be worse than Fitz/Savage (but only if they don't have to gut the team of all their potential free agents to absorb his cap number).
If Manning were to be available this offseason, do you think if you were the owner of an NFL team you would treat his availability exactly the same way as you would have in 2012? I think that's a little revisionist itself TBH. Arguments over Schaub on this board aren't hard to recall.
