I recently did my first half marathon. Was not too bad. I am not in the best shape and I did not train that much. What helped me was just small goals along the way and starting at a realistic pace so you don't have to walk at all. Cover your nipples! You can do it!

Sweet thanks for the tips! haha yes, the taping of those nipples! lol

aiming for under 90 min but guessing I'll land anywhere between 90 and 100! really should've got in a few more long runs. but between my 3-4 milers a day (and once a week two of those) and cross training twice a week with my PT, I should hopefully get close.

Yeah, you sound more ready than I was. I only averaged about 5.3 mph. I was going pretty slow at the end.

Running the half. 7th Aramco half and 14th half overall. 90 - 100 minutes is a very aggressive goal if your longest runs have been 3 - 4 miles, even twice a day and no matter what your pace. Since it is your first half, go out very conservatively for the first 3 - 4 miles, see how you feel, and take it from there. Going out too fast and then flaming out is a rookie move. Much better to be the guy passing folks in the last three miles than the guy being passed. Mostly, just remember to have fun, it's a great race.

You are running your first half and aiming for under 90 minutes? 90 minutes is less than 7 minutes a mile for 13 miles. Good luck!

What is the farthest you have run in one stretch?

Furthest I've gone is 10 mi around memorial on a splintering hot day a tick under 8 min per.

My 10km race times in Australia have been around the 41 min mark. And I did a casual 6mi two weeks ago at memorial at 42min.

yeah it's a bit aggressive goal.

just did my first treadmill run in years as it was cold as hell outside. was just aiming to run 90 min - no pace or speed in mind until about 80 min mark.

did 13.1 in a tick under 92 minutes, it was freaking hot in the gym though and didn't have my running shoes. so it *might* be doable.

next week and a bit - tapering!

Living in Minnesota, I look forward to 30 degree weather in the winter so I can run outside. I did a half last March in St. Paul when it was 17 degrees. Everything was fine except my hands. This running store guy sold me crappy gloves.

Not this year, but I'm going to run in 2016.

I've been running a year. My last race was the Katy YMCA Turkey Dash 10K where I finished in 46:43. That time made me eligible for early registration for the 2016 marathon (and a Corral A start position). I had told myself that I didn't want to run the marathon until I could meet the qualifying times for guaranteed entry/early registration. I didn't want to simply get in through the lottery (which they got rid of) or open registration. So I've met that goal.

I'm running my first Half in February (my longest race so far has been a 10 miler). Ambitious goal of 1:40:00 but more realistically somewhere between 1:41:00 and 1:42:00. I've already run sub 8 minute miles for 13+ miles in training though my long run pace is usually around 8 1/2 min/mi.

When I started running last January, I set a goal of at least 3:30:00 for when I eventually ran the marathon. Based on my past races, my predicted marathon time is already only slightly slower than that. Considering how much I've improved as a runner already, I don't think I'm going to have a problem beating 3.5 hours in 2016 after another year of training.

I think you can realistically hit 90 minutes in the half marathon even if you haven't run that distance before. It is actually easier running in a marathon as opposed to running at Memorial Park. Reason being is they provide beverages along the marathon pathway as opposed to not having anything while running at the park non stop. Plus there is more motivation at the actual marathon since so many random strangers are cheering you on. You'll also have more adrenaline rushing through you on race day. It's a great event that brings the community together.

I am running the full. My goal is 3:30 (8 min/mile). If anyone is interested in running with me out of Corral B please let me know.

If you're doing the full and hurting towards the end, I STRONGLY recommend going for the Jello shot if someone makes them available. Takes the edge off the pain just a touch:grin:

If you're one of those runner dudes with actual time goals this probably doesn't jive with you. I have no regrets.

That's a good sign - you will run faster in the cooler temps and with your running shoes (really?). And as Mr. Brightside points out, the adrenaline from the crowds always helps.

Since its your first half though, go out conservatively and just enjoy the experience. There are plenty of halfs to set records.

If you want to run the finish (always a good idea) and meet a bunch of runners my running club will meet at the zero mile marker at MP (right in front of the tennis center) at 6:30 Sunday morning, rain or shine. It is about 12 miles to GRB and back. Get there at 6:31 and we will be gone. I am aiming for a sub 1:30 but will be running easy on Sunday. Look for a short old fart with a bandanna.

Roc Rouge did the half marathon in 2:50:21. It was her first marathon, and needless to say she can't walk today.
