Yeah sadly I agree. I just need to convince my mom to sell her house relatively quick.

Glad to hear you are killing this trade.

We are looking like we are getting to the 47-48 handles I've been looking at for sometime in crude as an area I'm wanting to take a calculated risk on the long side.

I went ahead and got long in the 47 handle for a swing. I also shorted volatility for a big win today. Turning out to be a great day. 3 big winners and 1 small loser.

nicely done. i'm such a lazy guy now.

i still don't see much upside for oil in the near future. there may be some bounces here and there, but the trend is still solidly down. one of my oil field friends who has been pretty much right on oil the whole way down was speculating a couple weeks ago that $50 might be the new ceiling for oil for a bit. i guess a lot of companies are hedged and will just keep producing.

further my energy analyst friend who has been consistently wrong on oil prices still thinks oil has bottomed out each time i talk to him. once he panics then the bottom is in

I wouldn't sell my primary house unless I had (1) financial duress (2) had some place to move that was cheaper and was under (1) .

I wouldn't be buying at these prices though. There is overbuilding (supply) right now on apartments especially in the energy corridor. These will be shells soon.

yes I agree. I think I was just looking for something to do at that time on Apple which isn't the best strategy, But on my chart it was around a 1 month low so I wanted to do a small position with a exit on the low I mentioned if it occurred.

What do you guys think about mutual funds? etfs?

I'm looking to invest some extra cash instead of keeping it in a savings account. Any funds you all recommend? What should I be looking for when deciding which fund to go with?

for any mutual fund, when in doubt, go with a low expense ratio. vanguard funds are typically some of the lowest. VFINX is their S&P 500 index fund

Etf are good to play a broad market move. You can go short or long depending if the etf is bull or bear. Also some are leveraged 2x and 3x. Example dwti is the triple short on crude

Let me say that I am a novice at this. The most investing I've fone is to my Roth 401k. I would like to invest other money but still have it readily available if I needed it. If that makes sense although I'm thinking capital gains may end up hurting me if I'm constantly selling?

Referring to moochie's message, don't touch 2x or 3x leveraged ETF's - those are for experienced traders and they have a lot of unique quirks in how they lose value over time that most people don't understand. If you're new to this, I would stick with fairly basic ETF's. You can do marketwide ones, or sector specific ones. Or if you want to get creative and invest in "ideas", you can take a look at something like MotifInvesting.com as a way to help do that. A good basic ETF company that covers all the core sectors and market sizes is Ishares.com.

Long vs Short capital gains does play a role, but it depends on your tax bracket and goals, and how much trading you plan to do. If you've made a good profit after a month and are thinking of selling, it doesn't necessarily make sense to hold on another 11 months just to get better tax treatment. On the other hand, if you've owned something for 11 months, it may make sense to hold on another month.
