No one wanted to publish "blasphemous" cartoons before this attack, now they have even more reason. I think the shooters gave even more weight to any threats against the press.

I don't understand this response. RR says the difference between the two is very blurry and you come back and ask for a clear definition?

there are plenty of muslim posters on this message board who support stuff like this.

a couple threads come to mind...the florida pastor who burned a koran and when south park tried to show mohammed...there were a lot of really disturbing comments advocating violence and even death there.

Reading some of Rocket River's and others' posts on these threads is infuriating, especially in light of what just happened.

    I cannot . .. . i.e. the word SUBJECTIVE
Every person defines it for him or herself

"I cannot describe obscenitiy but i know it when i see it. " type of thing

Why wasn't that magazine building a more secure place and were French authorities complicit in not providing enough protection to it given the past fire bombing incident and all the threats? Or, was the magazine supposed to be responsible for their own security? It seemed like a cakewalk for the terrorists. Watching an interview with one of those magazine guys, it seems full well they knew they were targets and could be gunned down at some point. The passage of time may have given them a false sense of security. They stood up for what they were doing with their belief in freedom of speech/press. But, they paid the ultimate price for it.

Surfguy, two French police officers were outside the building and both were murdered, one wounded officer on the ground holding up his hands in a plea for his life was shot in the head.

    1. I was responding to a comment not a commentary on the actual mag
    2. That is your opinion of the magazine and evidently it is not shared by the folx that attacked it. It seems to me. . . from my observation. . .. that certain depictions are seen as hateful . .. whether you me or anyone else agrees . . .that is their feeling on the subject. Debate it .. .argue it .. . belittle it. . . it is *THEIR* belief on the subject .. . it is what it is
    3. At what point did I say they deserved anything?

    I was on a roll that day . .. . . . .

These guys will be caught, tried and punished. . . as they should be

What do you suggest to prevent future occurrances?
    Crusades? All out War?

He never used the word blurry.

No what he said was there was a "fine line" between offensive and hate speech, and that it was subjective.

I simply asked him to define that "fine line".

I see no difference. Offensive speech is hateful and hateful speech is offensive.

I don't understand what you are trying to say then. Fine line between hate speech, these guys thought it was hate speech. What if there was no debate and we all agreed it was hate speech? What then?

In light of 12 people dead I don't see the debate on anything the 12 people did.

I wasn't implying that you did. Perhaps I should have put 2 or 3 sentences in a separate paragraph. As for preventing future acts of this nature? Ruthless pursuit and prosecution of those responsible, of course. Not going to war when it is not in our national interest to do so, Bush II being the poster boy for going to war when we shouldn't have in Iraq, which literally opened a Pandora's Box of terrorism in the Middle East. It would also be very helpful if tens of thousands of Muslims were in the streets around the world protesting this brutal act of murder. That would be the most powerful message followers of Islam could send against these extremist madmen. Making some posts on a message board isn't remotely as effective as protesting in the streets, in my opinion.

The difference is that those things you mentioned are real and exist.
