In that case, yes, they should use a top pick or 2 for DB. As it stands right this second, it's not a pressing need.
Either that or he got a 'wink wink' call from Lovie... Lol.. I would be scared to take a corner in the 1st round even if it is a pressing need... But do you think the Texans should draft for need or best player available...?
Maybe _ maybe not. It's not like either one of them are all world players and they could probably replace at least one of them in the free agent market at a cheaper price.
Trusting Smith to draft a competent player in a position of need is asking for trouble. If we let go of both I'd rather spend money on a free agent than try drafting someone to come in and start right away. Given that we know what we are getting with KJ or JJo, you have to retain at least one.
My opinion is that you try to keep them both, at least one more year. I'm not sure if the likes of Bouye and Rolle are ready to be full-time starters.
They did best player available last year and avoided team needs but a lot of it depends on what is done with Reed. If he's gone, and not replaced in FA, his position needs to be addressed
Secondary definitely needs some help, but I hope we draft one to groom or as a future stud replacement rather than need (meaning we retain J-Jo and Kareem) because we all know how starting a rookie CB worked out. LB is also another huge hole. In response to drafting a TE earlier, Maxx Williams is a beast, and had a pretty sick TD in their bowl game vs Missouri. It really sucks that this team still has many holes to fill after having the number 1 pick last year...
I think they drafted for need last year. I don't believe CJ and Xavier were the best players available. And rather Reed stays are goes OLB is a pressing need. I think Bouye is ready to start. That kid was good for a rookie. I don't understand why people aren't more excited about him.
This defense will improve next year just by having a healthier Cushing, Clowney, and Nix. I think all three of those guys will improve our defense. Where the hell is all of our cap? LOL
the problem is that Cush may never be what he once was, even healthy. Clowney, given the type of surgery, will in no way be up to his previous form and Nix is just a flat out huge question mark. ... Even if healthy, we don't know if he's a good pro yet.
Agree about the sucky draft last year, but remember that all 30 NFL teams have a lot of holes to fill every off-season. This is not something unique to the Texans, although sometimes it may seem like it.
You can't make that call about Clowney yet. Depending on the size of the hole in the knee, he could very easily make a FULL recovery. Time will tell. Nix is a question mark from a health stand point. For Notre Dame he wrecked a ton of havoc for offensive lines. Cushing as noted by Ted Johnson and DeMeco Ryans will need a full year to start showing improvement. There is a lot of wait and see approach with my expectations, but I am of the positive bunch.
Sounds good. . . but don't recall TE's being big targets for our QBs this year How many catches/attempts to TEs did we do this year? Rocket River
You may be right about Clowney, but history isn't on our side. Not to mention, just like Cush needs a full year to recover, the same can be said about microfracture. Next season may be one of Clowney simply getting his legs under him and becoming comfortable. Point being, there are a lot of question marks with those guys and simply being healthy may not be good enough for them to perform at a high level.

Well, they actually did get a QB and CB... But you're going off of the needs for a Kubiak team and not necessarily a O'Brien coached team who said he wanted a smash mouth offense which is probably why he drafted Xavier and CJ. Who were not the best players available... And Clowney wasn't the best player available either _ Sammy Watkins was. Clowney was the best physical specimen but not necessarily the best player.
