The vetoed trade that would've sent Pau Gasol to Houston...

There seems to be a feeling around here that David Stern actually bailed out the Rockets by vetoing that infamous trade for "basketball reasons" that would've sent Gasol to Houston.

Is it just me (the annoying flopping aside) or is Gasol still at this age a pretty damn good player? Has a PER over 21.0 and is still just 34 years old.

This would've been our possible starting lineup if the trade went down:

Nene (speculated to be Morey's next move) | Dalembert/Camby
    Gasol | Patterson/Greg Smith
    Parsons | Budinger/Morris
    Lee | T-Will/?
    Lowry | Flynn/Boykins/?

On paper that's a pretty solid team, and they easily could've made it past the first round -- something we've yet to do. And with Morey already in control, there's no doubt he'd be able to add additional quality pieces to the Nene/Gasol/Parsons/Lee/Lowry core to address some of those question marks on the bench.

So yes, screw David Stern. That veto really did set back this franchise back from having earlier playoff success.

That trade would have doomed the Rockets to mediocrity for YEARS...Stern saved us.

You guys aren't even taking into account that Gasol had a really high trade value back then. So even if it didn't work out here, Morey could use him as a significant trade asset to further upgrade the team. Interestingly enough, he could've pursued James Harden since OKC would much rather have Gasol at C over Perkins.

I don't subscribe to the trade your way to the championship, I think you have to let team's cook a bit and develop chemistry and tweak - we trade too much and ultimately we waste the prime years of our stars.

I'm still disappointed not really now that Houston wasn't getting Chris Paul.

    Lakers: Chris Paul
    Rockets: Pau Gasol
New Orleans: Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic, Lamar Odom & a 2012 first-round pick that Houston had acquired from the Knicks.

That 2012 first round pick? Royce White. :p:grin:

    Instead:

Clippers: Chris Paul (+ two 2015 2nd round picks)
Pelihornets: Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu & 2012 1st round pick(Austin Rivers)

I am by far not a Chris Paul fan but I wonder what it would be like to have Paul as a Rocket floor general.

So you thought it should've gone through, and then Morey couldve flipped him for harden?

So why is this a thread?

The biggest bailout was that the Lakers didn't get Chris Paul.

As above. As much as I would like the idea of having Pau Gasol.
But I take Harden AND Dwight over Pau every day.

I love Pau Gasol. He would have been a cool FA target last summer, except he wouldn't have wanted to play with Dwight.

Lakers are the ones that need to back in time, pay Gasol and kick Kobe to the curb. Gasol being the superior player at this point isn't some new revelation, we all saw it coming.

Stern did Rockets a favor just as Bosh and Melo did Morey a favor (twice) by rejecting his offer.

Easily make the 2nd round? You do realize T-Will is on there as the potential 6th man right? That is a 10th seed team in the West at best.
