It has nothing to do with his injury. Remember that McHale benched him when Bev came back from the hammy the first time. He couldn't get any playing time til that Memphis massacre where they were down 30. Then Bev got hurt again against Dallas and lo and behold, Canaan was right back in the starting lineup the next game.

It looks like McHale has settled on a PG rotation of Bev and Terry and just doesn't want to find any time for Canaan. Which was ok when those two guys were knocking down 40+% of their 3's. But with both struggling from the field recently, it's inexcusable to keep Canaan on the bench.
