When it happened 12 years ago and I'd never heard of the guy before then, yeah it shouldn't be surprising.

He was castigating them for their ideology (per the NPR story I heard on it anyway). Ayers and Obama were champaigning and campaigning. Totally different.

So the question I ask myself is if Obama had spoken at a meeting of the Communist Party of America (or someone equally disposed by conservatives) a decade ago, would this guy be tearing into his ass for it today.

Truthfully, I don't know really anything at all about this guy, so I don're know. I do have a pretty good idea, however, how the average Republican in congress would react, so my tentative response is that what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

I guess it is possible that this guy is one of the only fair minded members of congress on either side of the isle, in which case I would change my opinion. However, I'm not very positive that I can see conservatives electing someone who is "soft on liberals" to be the Whip, so he is probably receiving exactly what he'd be dishing out given half a chance.

Not that it matters, since the narrative is more important than the truth to the "hands up, don't shoot" crowd, but...

Steve Scalise spoke to civic association meeting, not white nationalist conference, David Duke adviser Kenny Knight says

Reports that Rep. Steve Scalise, the third-ranking Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, gave a speech to a white nationalist conference connected with David Duke in 2002 are not accurate, the man who organized the events said Wednesday (Dec. 31).

Kenny Knight, a longtime political adviser to Duke, said Scalise spoke at a meeting of the Jefferson Heights Civic Association -- not affiliated with the European-American Unity and Rights conference that was held in the same Metairie hotel -- two-and-a-half hours before the white nationalist event started.

Barbara Noble, who was dating Knight and said she attended the meeting, also said Wednesday that Scalise spoke to the civic group, not EURO.

    White Noise

Did House Majority Whip Steve Scalise admit to speaking at a white supremacist event he never attended?

    By Betsy Woodruff

Knight estimates that about two-thirds to three-quarters of the people in the hospitality room at the civic association meeting were local residents who weren’t there to attend the EURO event, and about one-third to one-quarter were EURO convention attendees who arrived early and filtered into the hospitality room to drink coffee and kill time.

“I don’t think Steve was aware that there was a small contingent of people who came and sat in the audience prior to the EURO meeting,” Knight said.

I asked Knight if there was a sign on the hospitality room indicating it had been reserved for the EURO conference.

“I think not,” Knight said. “I really truly believe, if there were any signs or banners up, Mr. Scalise would [have asked], ‘What is that?’ And he probably would have left. Because I don’t recall having any banners or signs up at all.”

Knight said that when he invited Scalise to speak to the civic association, he never mentioned that it would be held in the same room the EURO conference would later use or that some conference attendees may be present.

Barbara Noble, Knight’s then-girlfriend who was also present at the hotel event and who I spoke with separately, corroborated Knight’s account.

“[Scalise] was just up there for a few minutes, maybe 10, 15 at the most, and it was in the morning,” she said.

So the guy who organized the event says he wasn't there to speak to the white supremacist group. But what the hell, what would he know?

    RACIST!

So this guy went to something that he now says he "regrets" and was a "mistake" but reports are that he was there to castigate the audience for their beliefs and that he did not even attend the meeting. Seems legit.

I don't know who this guy is or care anything about this but I like the reporting here.

And if you think I thought your comment was in defense of the republicans than you massively misunderstood my post... But sarcasm is hard to read. Associating with Ayers is not the same as associating with white supremacist groups.

And how do you know...??? That's Louisiana.

You can't use it as a comparative analogy if you don't have any evidence of it other than your childish regional and class bias.

I didn't know black people were the only group that can be stereotyped in this country but it's against the rules to stereotype a white supremacist group in a racist state like Louisiana... My bad. But I notice you was quick to bring up the Black Panthers though... But I guess that's fine

You like to string together a bunch of words conjuring up post full of meaningless banter so you're the last one to call someone else childish.

I brought up three disparate but specific organizations with historically and well-documented actions and platforms beyond both mainstream thought. You're falsely accusing a specific group of undocumented actions and then you justifying it through regional bias. You're knowingly lying through your teeth and then rationalizing it with your own prejudice, that's childish.

Rocket River sees race as a motive in everything, at least everything white people do. Which probably indicates quite a bit of racist tendencies, so yeah.

Yea, sure you did. The Black Panthers go hand and hand with Men Who Like Boys and white supremacist have a well documented history of being angels in this country... Lol.

And me saying Louisiana is a racist state doesn't make me bias _ it's just a fact. Are you trying to say it isn't...???

They're three different groups that it would be politically controversial to speak with. You falsely claimed that the group Scalise spoke to engaged in lynchings and church bombings, then you falsely implied that Louisianans engage in this activity. To categorically label an entire state as racist fifty years into integration is childish and idiotic.

But yet it's okay for you to stereotype all of the Black Panthers... You're b****in at me for something you are doing yourself. "Hello there pot... Your hypocrisy level is overflowing."

Categorically label an entire state.... Lol... Now you're just nitpicking to cover up your blinded ignorance to the social issues in this country. You're living in your own little world with an adolescent view.
