So a customer orders a vegetable sandwich that we normally serve with cheese. I ask her what kind of cheese she wants on it, she replies in a real disdainful tone "No, REAL vegans don't eat dairy" . I don't understand the logic in that. How is drinking milk from a cow anti-vegan?

You should have asked which level Vegan she is and then pull out a Kubiak sized chart to consult.

Vegans don't consume any animal products what so ever, not milk, cheese or yogurt.

Fun fact, honey isn't vegan, its considered and animal product.

Experience - vegan for about 2 years now.

Been vegan for a year. I've only had one issue with one resturaunt not being honest about their ingredients. Other than that, with a nice smile and polite attitude everyone else has been quite accommodating.

I'm not sure what she meant by "real" but it's probably similar to a "real" American.

You mean in the same situation you might have just simply said "No cheese thanks"? Seems like a good move.

i forget the term but there is another way in which you dont eat anything in which you have to kill the plant to eat it.

meaning you only eat something a plant bears as a fruit, seed etc.

so if you knew that term you could have said those are the "real vegans"

We definitely cater to a lot of vegetarians. Your people are a large growing segment of my customer base. She actually sounded insulted when I asked her about the cheese, so it was kind of a surprise to me specially since that particular sandwich has been served countless times and we always ask everyone what cheese they want on it.

So do vegans not wear wool either?

Well many vegans usually don't go that deep into the lifestyle, but yes being a vegan means you don't wear animal products like leather, wool and other furs. Its a b**** trying to find some quality shoes that don't have any leather or aren't made with animal glues.

Level 14 vegans don't wear wool level 23 vegans don't wear cotton. I forgot the level for vegans who DON'T wear silk but DO eat mushrooms.

You're hitting the philosophic, going further than dietary veganism. Myself, I do have non leather belts, shoes and other accessories. I do have a legacy wool suit but I don't see the need to buy a cotton suit anytime soon.

For some of the more unknown nonvegan items is white sugar. It is processed with bone char - bones from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and other places where the animals have died of natural causes. This is probably one of the harder ones to avoid, but life is not perfect.

As for your customers, I guess it is your choice where you decide to take your menu.

Hmm it seems like OP doesn't understand the difference between vegans and vegetarians. "Real vegans" would not wear wool. The sheep used for wool production have been bred to produce more than is necessary. They are often subjected to brutal shearing. Even if you don't agree with foregoing animal products you have to admit that animals are commoditized and subsequently brutalized to make much of the crap we eat and use.

yup, no dairy, basically they can't consume anything that comes from an animal

I feel bad for them because they have to get their proteins from genetically modified soy products to replace meat.

As other posters noted my understanding is "Vegans" don't eat or use animal products. Some vegetarians eat things like dairy, eggs and honey and some of those might call themselves some type of vegan but I don't think that is technically correct.

There are also different degrees of vegetarians on things like dairy. Many vegetarians might drink organic milk but not eat cheese because the curdling agent in traditional cheeses is rennet which is made from calf and lamb stomachs. Chipotle addresses this by having their cheese curdled with a vegetable based rennet.

My guess is that your cheese is either a non-animal based rennet cheese so most vegetarians are able to eat it and / or the vegans who have been eating it are vegans in name only.

So hard core vegans and fruitarians actually exist? By exist, I mean eat that way for an extended period of time.
