If that's the case, I'd almost rather him go on and trade Canaan. I think the kid is really good -- let him go flourish somewhere else. I have no doubt he will. Color me completely underwhelmed by Shved, both in Philly and in his Houston debut. Meh.

OK, now that sounds very reasonable to me.

Also, it's possible McDonough would rather have multiple picks + DMo + Pap since Morey has probably taken NOP 1st off the table.

Therefore, Canaan, Capela and Johnson are now being shopped for picks (i.e. liquidity) in order to be packaged to PHX.

    Just thinking out loud here...

I know Capella is the player Rockets fans kind of want to dump the quickest because he's so raw, but I feel he's the player Morey most want to keep. I would not be surprised if the asking price is a 1st round pick, and probably not even a bad one. Capella was ranked pretty highly before the draft by numerous sources and he's the perfect player for a rebuilding team. If nothing else, his trade value should be highest among our young guys.

I think the Mavs had a conversation with the Suns and have realized that we have a pretty good/scary chance at acquiring Dragic. This would obviously drive Cuban insane.

I predict a lot of Rocket-bashing in the media between now and trade deadline. Doesn't help that our 3 most famous players are not very well liked.

was told rockets really wanted the Bruno kid that Toronto drafted at #20 (or 21?) prior to Capela being chosen. Capela was their plan B but they didn't think they would have to go to it since no one really had Bruno on their radar and when Toronto did get him everyone was shocked. They also didnt expect Capela to basically froce his way onto the roster they really wanted him to stay overseas at least one more year. Cant see Morey being too attached to him right now especially if he can help net a player to help right now

To be clear, I don't think Morey will get too much in return for any of these players individually.

However, this is not because of the Smith situation, but rather because the trade value for prospects who haven't really shown much yet is just not very high. Johnson, Capela, Canaan and Black were not premier prospects when they entered the league not so long ago, and have not done enough to change that perception.

Getting some sort of 2nd round pick is about the most that you can expect. Maybe even just the right to swap a future 2nd round pick (which, btw, is what Morey got for Steve Novak back in the days and which resulted in a pick that was used on Chandler parsons)

All I am saying is that if a team has interest in one of these guys, and was willing to pay a small price for him, the Smith situation doesn't change the situation a whole lot. The other team's incentive for trading for a player, and thus Morey's "leverage," is the same as it ever was: You have a player that the other team values, and the only way they can have that players is by making a deal with you for him.

Morey is just trying to squeeze even a tiny bit of extra value out of a situation right now, and he has managed to do that in the past even when the world knows that he was in a "use it or lose it" situation. A recent example happened this year, when the Rockets had a bunch of non-guaranteed deals that they had to either trade or cut by the start of the regular season, Morey managed to deal some of them to Sacramento and got 2 2nd round picks for taking on Jason Terry's salary. The point is that it's not always about what situation you are in. If the other team wanted something that you can provide, you can often get value for it.

I don't so either but Stein was being a dick with his comments on twitter. We already knew from Cyberx and Feign that Houston was looking to make a trade since earlier this afternoon. I don't feel Morey will feel pressed to make something happen.

That's fine if Dragic comes , I just would rather keep Canaan over Johnson, black Capella, Dorsey.

I don't see where Marc Stein was being a dick. In fact, I don't think he is sharing any information that Daryl Morey doesn't want out there.

Morey is keeping his options open, as he almost always does. And even if he really just prefers, say, trading Joey Dorsey while holding onto the other guys, Morey has incentive to let other teams think that he's keeping his options open so that they can't quite pin down what exactly he's trying to do.

I don't think Morey wants almost half of his players knowing that they are being readily shopped. That's not a good way to keep relationships strong.
