Depends on the return. Obviously if he doesn't find a trade then you waive Black and move on But if you get a good return on a deal involving one of those other guys, you pull the trigger. Not sure why that post from Stein has so many up in arms. I mean I wouldn't want us to just give away Johnson or Canaan or Capela, but I certainly wouldn't freak out if we traded one of those guys for a good pick or packaged a couple of them in a bigger deal.....
Agreed. Cuban and his lap dog are salty as hell. Stein is obviously touting the tired narrative that Morey 'doesn't care about chemistry' and treats his players like assets. There is no way Morey is dumping Capela, Johnson, or Canaan simply to create roster space for Smith. As others have noted, Black can easily be waived with little lost in cap flexibility. Morey wins again and it's driving these guys nuts LOL
i know stein has close ties to Dallas but the claims that that correlates to him just BS-ing just seem ridiculous. it's not like any of those players, while we may like them, are UNTOUCHABLE or anything. Morey probably doesnt want to just go to a team and simply say 'hey, u want dorsey?' and thats it. He has to make it seem like hes willing to play some ball, entertain SOME offers. he already has a rep as someone who wins in his trades more often then not.
1. Morey cares a lot about his players. Nobody will be hearing about any trades or cuts on Christmas day. Geez, that would be a heartless thing to do. 2. He feels a lot of obligation in his role as GM. If there is a trade out there which will benefit the team more than simply cutting the least needed player, and he doesn't at least test the waters to see if anything's available, then he will look at that as a personal and professional failure. 3. In the end though, as we have seen time and time again, Morey does not make moves out of desperation. He sticks to his guns. If no one offers what he considers is fair value for any of the guys, then he'll walk away easy peasy. 4. What do Morey and I have in common? Both of us are burning the midnight oil on Christmas Eve/Christmas. I've got about 14 hours more in my shift. Sucks, don't it? So releasing a player is still the most likely happenstance, but whatever happens it won't be tomorrow.
Because asset value optimization. Morey might as well explore whether he could get even slightly more value via a trade of one of these guys than he could do by just cutting Black or anyone else. Why get 30 cents in a transaction when you can get 31 cents?
Funny thing is that either Dorsey or Black are an upgrade over the mavs current backup center. I'd much rather have them over greg smith. Don't you think cuban would prefer we go the waive route?
Stein tweeted that crap as both he and Cuban were crying while Stein was sucking Cuban's dick. Suck HARDER Stein. Suck short and hard.
Only way I see this happening is if Morey has already shopped the 'bottom third of the roster' weeks before Smith was released by SVG. These types of deals take time to develop in order to 'optimize' ALL possible asset values. As it stands today, Morey holds little leverage because the NBA execs obviously know he needs to create room for Smith. Therefore we may say that any calls being made are for Dorsey and/or Dorsey in consideration for future 2nd rounders. My view is Morey is left with little option but to waive Tarik Black. All other thoughts of Morey magically pulling off NEW trades of rookie-scale, non-rotation players (not named Black, Dorsey) during Christmas are far-fetched, to say the least.
Good synopsis. Nobody needs to be freaking out over this. Morey won't give anyone away. I imagine he won't trade Canaan or Capela for anything less than a 1st. Nick Johnson should command a 2nd. You get back offers for each of the 5 players and choose the one that best fits your goals. Or you just cut Black ($125k guaranteed). I think you could see Morey ship out Black and one of Canaan/Johnson for an underperforming former 1st round pick on an impatient team.
disagree. His pitch is: "Will you give me something of value for Canaan, Johnson, or Capela? If not, I'll just cut Tarik Black or Joey Dorsey." He hasn't lost any leverage here. Just shopping the young guys to see if he can get value before releasing Black/Dorsey. As for the deals - I'm sure he already knows which GMs have shown interest and it's a matter of how much they're willing to give. Morey's like the American Indian - uses the entire roster and never lets anything go to waste.
