I have to say, I've been a McHale hater until this year. I don't know if the X's and O's will ever be up to par with other top tier NBA coaches. That being said, the player development results are undeniable. Motiejunas, Jones, Beverley, Canaan, Dwight Howard's post game, and of course, the most improved player on this team by far over the past two years, James Harden. If we're going to give McHale a lot of the blame for gameplan ineptitude, then perhaps we should cut him a share of the credit for what has been an organizational resolve to get our entire roster to improve year over year. From rookies to FA signings to seasoned vets, we are starting to approximate the performance of the San Antonio Spurs in terms of extracting the best of the abilities of each of our players. Now, we have Corey Brewer coming from a career of being on perennial also-rans to providing us a huge boost off the bench. The next challenge, then, might be rehabilitating Josh Smith.
You have a great season like this one, yes you will have teams ready and willing. There is a lack of B rate coaches and we need one. A coaches are not available right now. And C and D rated coaches are everywhere. Lock a B up because there is not an A coach around who could work with Howard the way McHale does.
i thought he was just extended during the playoffs? mchale needs to make sure with his accountant that daryl morley is not using monopoly money.
Almost each single play call in the NFL will be coming from the coach/co-ordinators. Its totally different than the NBA. There is no comparison between these 2 coaches. Bill Belichick could be the greatest X&O coach ever in NFL, but his style could fail in the NBA.
Depressing news. Atleast wait until he gets the team to the second round before extending him. His coaching job in the playoffs last year should have gotten him fired.
Gary Kubiak wasn't a hall of fame player, and is 1000000x less charismatic than Kevin McHale. When he talks, people listen. It showed in his commentary while working for TNT.

I wonder how much of our offensive issues in terms of flow is due to constantly moving pieces around. Rockets only have 4 rotational players from last year playing this year.
What did he do wrong in the Portland series? Inserted Troy Daniels in clutch situations. Had the team feed Howard when Harden wasn't getting it done. Took 2 games to double Aldridge, but isn't Morey's philosophy to allow teams to shoot long twos? The Rockets win that series if Aldridge didn't play the best ball of his life for two games. It was ridiculous what he was doing. Portland deserved to win.
Good move. You build continuity, and its obvious all of our players love playing for him. If McHale continues the pace we are at his value will only increase so its a smart move locking him up. If he ****s the bed you just fire him and bite the bullet. To all you idiots not liking the move, do you not see improvement in him over the last three years. There is no coach out there right now that can coach this team better.
The team has improved every year since he arrived. So the team has been moving in the right direction. Players seem to like him. He reminds me of Rudy T, in the way the players want to play for him. I'm surprised they didn't wait until after the season. But maybe this sends a message to possible free agents and current Rocket players that this franchise is stable and happy with current leadership.
Ok, fine. I agree with this, totally. It's Les's money, it's nothing compared to SVG and Kerr. But man, if we don't get passed the 1st round again, this is all on McHale
Not sure that we would expect any other response from Les. Wouldn't he expect that with any coach he hires or extends?
