Can we cut Dorsey and add money to the $2 mill? Sounds like the Heat are trying to pay him more with the disabled player exception. Can we figure a way to beat it?
Lets ask the simple question (assuming Josh Smith is OK with playing 6th man) Would you rather have a lineup of: Dmo/Howard starting with 1) dorsey/black as backups or 2) dorsey or black/smith as backups Because that is what most likely will happen
People are scared of him over chemistry concerns? He's going to be on a cheap contract and if he were to cause any problems you can easily waive him. And just because a guy is playing poorly on offense doesn't mean he's a completely useless player. Just because he's inefficient doesn't mean he's suddenly a horrendous player. He isn't a star, but he could easily be a very very useful role player which is what this team needs. You aren't paying him that albatross contract.
DD, how would you feel about Smith on this team if somehow let's say he were to strictly focus on rebounding, defense, and clean up work around the paint and only on that. No offensive sets run for him, and he say magically doesn't look for his own shot. If such a Josh Smith were to exist and play for this team, how would you feel about him?
I just don't see the negatives for getting Smith. The chemistry to me isn't a valid reason to not get him. I don't think there's hard evidence that can make me believe that he'll destroy chemistry and yes you can make the same argument that how will you know he'll play better. But at $2mill you can't just pass this up. There's 96mins of playing time between PF/C that's plenty for DMO/Howard/Smith and theoretically all 3 could play 30+ mins a game barring any other factors. If we get Smith, I really hope Morey doesn't make a move for any other player. I really want to see what this lineup can do.
I admit I'm wrong all the time, but Josh Smith is what TJ wants to be. You are judging him off of his last two seasons in Detroit. You haven't watched many games I can tell, because you would understand Detroit uses him as a three and first option at times. You are ignoring the fact that he will come to Houston and be a minimum third option. D-Mo isn't starting material. He can't defend agile PF's and lacks the ability of a backside shot blocker. He also slows our fast break to a grinding halt.
Exactly. Someone has to convince me that holding the $2M is somehow obviously better than getting JSmoove. Even if we get him for the BAE, we aren't somehow then OBLIGATED to play him if he sucks. Just waive him if he's that terrible or destroying chemistry. People who are against this move, please explain to me the risks and what we are losing, and I mean in practical terms. Not that he's bad now because even adding a bad player for nearly nothing isn't that detrimental when there is still upside to him contributing.
The bolded part is what I disagree with. Josh Smith has been one of the worst players in the NBA the last few seasons and I don't want to make excuses for that. I see Josh Smith as a Joey Dorsey caliber player...if Joey Dorsey thought that he was a superstar caliber player and somehow was able to start.
Check that Defensive Box Plus/Minus. You want to point out stats and other intriquite facts regarding his play.... The guy played for the DETROIT PISTONS. There's no system, its a train wreck there. There's no communication on the court and that's due to management and the compilation of a bunch of chuckers out there. I've seen their games, and it's a lack of communication out there. He hustles, gets blocks, gets rbs, dunks. He's not an outside shooter and if McHale can get him to buy in. He makes us the favorites to win it all. He's that talented. Josh Smith can buy into our system, because we have a system. We have legit stars who he can follow. I think it's the perfect chance for him to prove doubters wrong. It's not like this guy has unproven talent. We know what he can bring, which is why every playoff team is chasing this guy. You can say he's trash all you want. Morey's gonna get him and he's gonna start. Deal with it.
I don't believe a leopard will change his spots, I think Smith is an uncontrollable low BBall IQ player who is simply not smart enough to play as a role player. And when you add in a player that is USED TO BEING THE GUY and asking him to subjegate himself - it rarely works with low BBall IQ players. I think Josh Smith is like that, a JR Rider type, who is what he is, and will never change enough to be a quality role player. I know it may not be a popular opinion because he is the shiny object in the stream at the moment and he is cheap - but just because you CAN sign someone does not mean you SHOULD sign them. Chemistry is good with this team - every single player you consider going forward needs to have that as a top priority because we are 20-7 with a ton of injuries and a great mix of young and veteran - this team as assembled is good enough as is to win it all - all you need is a little more health out of TJo. IMHO, having a bigs rotation of DHo, TJo and DMo is enough - they are all a lot better than Smith - to me he would be the 4th big on this team, and I have no doubt that he would not accept that role. DD
Yes - If the Pistons approached the Rockets and said "We'll trade you Josh Smith if you're willing to give up Tarik Black or Joey Dorsey" what would you say????
I mean it's a risk you have to take. If it works, you are suddenly top contenders. If it doesn't, you can cut him if he's causing issues in the locker room.
This team has been bad offensively when D-Mo and Howard are on the floor together. I guarantee Smith will solve our Clipper and Thunder problems.
But let's say you could wave a magic wand and make it so. How would you feel about him in that role no this team? I'm trying to make a distinction between concern about his ability to impact the game vs. his ability to accept a role. So if he did accept such a role, do you think he'd positively impact the game on the court by being strictly a rebounder/defender and 5th option on the offensive end?
18.8pts, 9.6rebs, 3.9asts, 1.4stls, 1.7blks 17.5, 8.4, 4.2, 1.2, 1.8 16.4, 6.8, 3.3, 1.4, 1.4 So this is a terrible player? Really? Let's look at this player.... 10.6pts, 6.1rebs, 1.4assts, .6stls, .6blks This is our current PFs numbers....I'm no statistician, but it seems pretty obvious to me. And before you say "He didn't play as many minutes". He's started a lot of games this year...and if he didn't start in the past, it's bc he wasn't good enough. I like DMo, but he isn't better.
Does anybody believe in a wink/wink deal with Detroit where Les has agreed to pick up SOME of Smith's salary? The two teams were talking about Drummond/Smith very recently.
Dennis Rodman is a cancer in San Antonio and a champion in Chicago. Ron Artest is a cancer in Indiana and a champion in Los Angeles. Rasheed Wallace is a cancer in Portland and a champion in Detroit. Stephen Jackson is a cancer in ____ and a champion in San Antonio. There is one common denominator among Chicago, Los Angeles, and Detroit. They either had a strong star that said crazy player could accept (Jordan, Bryant) or a great coach that they respect (Larry Brown, Greg Popovich). Young guys respect Van Gundy. I have a feeling the older guys dont. And both Atlanta and Detroit did not have a true Boss, a take-over-the-game superstar that said crazies would respect (the problem with Rodman in SA is that he didn't respect Robinson- told the media this). You put Josh Smith on a team with James Harden and Dwight Howard, along with a coach he will respect like Kevin McHale- maybe even bring in Dream to work with him and influence on the post play as opposed to jacking up ill-advised shots- and Josh Smith can flourish here even with his declining skills.
