You assume that he will listen and do his job....why do you think the Pistons are dumping him for NOTHING? Because he doesn't listen and is a chucker - that is 100% the problem the guy is not a team player, plays how he likes without any regard for team play. If we could trust that he would play within the team framework, then fine, but he has proven time and time again, that is not him. JR Rider is a guy that comes to mine here, talented, malcontented player who is a poor player to coach. If Morey gets him, fine, but I hope he goes elsewhere and takes his cancer with him. DD
OK, I agree 100% with this, low risk financially, but how it effects the other players on the court is what I think is the issue. Either way - clearly I hate the guy, always have, and think he is a terrible NBA player these days. Whatever the Rox decide, I will of course, fall in line. DD
Nobody has ever asked Smith to only take 3s and layups. It's one thing to tell a kid he can't eat candy when other kids around him are doing it but it is another thing to say that nobody here eats candy. (candy=long and mid range jumps shots)
he's definitely 6'7. did dwight stay the same size coming out of high school too? or do you need proof of that too
Ain't no risk with Josh Smith. If you believe there's a risk, you also believe Harden doesn't play defense. Stop reading into the media narrative.
Agreed! When i first heard about this yesterday...i wanted to vomit...but, after thinking reasonably that Morey has been trying to get this guy for the last 2 years and now can get him without losing any player, its a no brainer. The fact that the Rockets will not need him to be #1, #2 or hell even #3 or #4, is a huge plus. The Pistons are the idiots here. They gave him a huge contract expecting WAY TO MUCH from him. What risk is there?
So you are saying he is a stretch 4? http://espn.go.com/nba/player/_/id/2411/josh-smith Career 28% 3pt shooter....DMO is better than that and he is not a 3pt shooter. DD
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Sources: nearly every playoff team besides ATL has reached out to Josh Smith's reps; some of course out of due diligence...</p>— Chris Broussard (@Chris_Broussard) <a href="https://twitter.com/Chris_Broussard/status/547434221485441024">December 23, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
I view it like this, Josh Smith is infinitely better than Tarik Black as a backup 4. With Dorsey and Dmo behind Dwight, you have the versatility now to strictly use Smith as a low block 4. Nail his ass to the paint where can can defend and finish and this is a no-brainer.
Yes, but will he play there Moes? He seems to always frustrate coaches because he freelances, and does not play within the team concept. Every other playoff team is looking at him EXCEPT Atlanta - what does that say? LOL - the guy is a cancer - he can't be trusted to play a designated role. If Morey wants him, I will cheer for him, but I personally hope he goes to another team. DD
I'm not taking a side in the Josh Smith size debate because I have no idea how tall he is, but I absolutely loathe when people use this ridiculous method to try to demonstrate their point about height. You cannot tell anything about either man's height in that picture unless you do a real scientific analysis of each one's pose, but even then you'd only be able to tell who is taller.
I'm not saying he is a stretch 4 but I we can live with him taking 1-3 corner 3s a game if the rest of his game is played in the paint. Long and mid range jumpers are what kills his efficiency.
I don't understand this "locker room cancer" objection that is being parroted. Again, I did not want Josh Smith when he was a free agent looking at a near max contract. I objected siting all of the flaws that have been so evident in Detroit. But I never made the claim he is a locker room cancer because I have never read that by any credible journalist. I've only seen it said on forums. I think it's pure speculation. Regardless, we're talking about signing Josh Smith for the same money Joey Dorsey is currently making. How is there anyone who could possibly oppose that? Let's say, hypothetically, that he is a locker room cancer; we dump him. The Pistons just dumped him with more than 30 million dollars remaining on his contract. I am pretty sure we can handle the loss of less than 2 million. Sure, that would mean we wasted our bi-annual exception, but who else are we potentially going to use it on? Jermaine O'Neal is looking like he'll be going to Dallas. Ray Allen isn't likely and really doesn't address a need anymore. So who is left that you would rather use the BAE on? Kenyon Martin? Josh Smith isn't a shooter. But he is basically the power forward version of Corey Brewer. He can defend. He can run the floor and score in transition. He can make plays; be them steals or blocks. I think the real issue with Josh in Detroit is the same problem Charlotte is having with Lance Stephenson and, for that matter, that the Rockets had with Trevor Ariza in his first stint here. None of those guys are 'the man'. But they were all brought into situations to be the man. And they're all terrible in that role. Trevor Ariza needed a situation like the one he currently has with the Rockets. Lance Stephenson needed a situation like Indiana. And Josh Smith needs to be in a situation like he was in Atlanta or would be here in which he would, at worst, consider himself the third option. And if the team doesn't want to utilize him in the role he envisions, well, it's so much easier to compromise when you're winning. I HATED the idea of bringing in Josh Smith if we struck out on Dwight. But this? This is divine intervention. 29 year old power forwards who can do the things Smith is capable of are just not available for 2 million dollars. They just aren't. Go get him, Morey!
You don't think him shooting under 28% from 3pt range also hurts his efficiency? And again, I am all for it, if TJo is not coming back - but for me, this is the player in the NBA I can't stand - he is fools gold. DD
