He probably thinks his teammates won't wait for him to re-establish the post. In the Nuggets game Bev had the ball and wouldn't wait for Dwight to get position on NATE ROBINSON! Bev swung the ball to a three point shooter before even entertaining the thought of giving it to Dwight with a mouse in the house. I agree with you though Dwight's positioning in the post is pretty awful too. He needs to just stop at the block and go no farther.
You gotta take the good with the bad when it comes to both PatBev & Howard. Damn , a lot of this is coaching .... Howard needs to do one of two things on every trip down the court unless , run the pick & roll with Harden or run to the rim and establish deep post position. (unless of course DMo is posting up then he needs to work the baseline on the opposite side , catch a pass & dunk or crash the boards)
I refuse to believe that Mchale isn't working on post position and post passing in practice. Maybe it's just not translating into games.
It's almost solely on Bev not having enough patience. I swear I'm going to start tallying the amount of time he straight up ignores the guy posting up or ruins the entry pass in some other way. It's infuriating.
Bev is only in his 1st real year of actually being a legit starting PG with no real competition. His basketball IQ is through the roof and he's still fairly young. He will figure this stuff out.
Dwight with the second team was great. Papa and Brewer were excellent post passers. I actually credit them for getting Dwight engaged in the game. Dwight was getting deep post positioning and the ball was actually passed while he had 2 feet in the paint! The pass Papa gave Dwight from he top of the key shows me that he is always looking down low for Dwight. but of course was know this from his passes to DMO. Brewer's post feed, Dwight's pass back and re-post, then the pass back to the post from Brewer had me screaming and jumping up and down. It should be that easy ALL THE TIME! I think that was the first time Ive seen Dwight repost and get the ball back. If Dwight can get those type of feeds from the guards he wont need any post moves. The hook shot is enough.
Finally someone who gets it. This being a Rockets forum, I'm a little surprised that no one in the last month has brought up how many hours and hours of practice it took to master making the post entry pass to Hakeem, according to Rudy T. It has less to do with personnel than dedication and prioritization. The Rockets' offense is designed to be simple to learn in part to facilitate a flexible roster strategy. I would speculate that in such an environment, the required investment to perfect post entry pass technique is not going to be expended. It's not a coaching or player issue.
One issue posters will one issue post. Sorry, but competent starting caliber NBA guards and wings know how to post entry pass very well. It is entirely a personnel issue as well as a result of how the game is played in general nowadays. I guarantee you Shved is good at post entry passing. Papa is great at it. Brewer seems solid. D-Mo is above average. Canaan is competent. And obviously Harden is Harden. It's just Bev and Ariza who are terrible at it and would rather take the shot themselves than be patient while the guy posts up. Didn't watch the game so idk what happened today. But it seems they limited their shots and there was a lot more post ups done in a correct manner. To a lesser extent Terry is not a good post entry passer either. Definitely seems like a personnel issue more than anything as these 3 (Bev/Ariza/Terry) are 3 out of the 6 (Harden, Papa, and Brewer) post entry passers we have on this team.
Feel free to continue to believe your own biased opinion and ignore all evidence to the contrary: Spoiler
I've always maintained that the old tradition of former players as GMs is dumb. GMs mostly make business decisions, which is usually not a strong suit with players. Now we have more and more teams hiring non-basketball people as GM. Morey was one of the first. I still think this is smart. However, the caveat is that non-basketball people don't understand how a team actually works, with different parts interacting together. You can only know this by actually having gone through it yourself, either as players or as coaches. Morey's apparent "if only you get enough talents you'll be good" assumption neglects how these talents work together. Chemistry is not just some magical things between players. It takes time to develop. All good offenses need time to develop. Adelman's beautiful offense needs at least a whole season for players to get it. And it takes certain kinds of player to get it. Not all good players are good in the same way. Defense is even more team oriented than offense. So you need time to gel as a good defensive machine. You need time to PRACTICE defensive executions. I still believe that smart business minded people are superior than former players as GMs. But they need to learn--LISTEN--to the basketball people, the coaches, and not just making deals to force their hands.
It's terrible K-Pap is the best entry passer on the team. Anybody notice how after Morey gave J-Smooth a starting job the team took a step back. But after D-Mo was inserted into the starting lineup again the team started looking like a contender again? The only thing this team is missing is a PG that can create and make solid entry passes. I'm betting Morey finds this PG by Feb 19th.
Beverley was still so bad, it took him sometimes 5-10 seconds to get the ball into the post. Harden is also not that great. Papa & Brewer are good, Terry is solid. We need a lot of work, still!
The reason bev are so bad at it is because they don't practice it. It's a fundamental thing and it falls under the responsibility of the staff. Setting picks having players move without the ball. Pop gets this rolling by being harsh and putting the work required. McHale is intelligent but he is a pushover most the times, that's why he still has a job.
