Good point I dont believe (and want) that Morey will give Dmo in a Dragic trade. Dmo is now very important. He can play C when Dwight get some rest. Even if Smith come aboard, I see Dmo will get his minutes. and remember, Dmo has another year with rookie contract, and then he will be RFA.

He is still getting paid in full by the Pistons. In the end it will come down to where he wants to play and not about the couple million extra.
Remember, Smith's agent said he's signing with contenders only. So we shouldn't need to worry about the Heat
Yeah I'm confused about how this all works. A couple reporters said the Rockets had th BAE which is a little more than what other teams can offer and now Miami has the injury exception. Why would this matter to Smith? Doesn't it just got subtracted from what Detroit has to pay? Doubt that's the case if the reporters are saying what they're saying.
The difference between the DPE and the BAE is around $580,000. I'm hoping the opportunity to play with his best friend, and for the organization that's wanted him for a while now wins out over a few extra dollars.
Miami is not a threat. Currently the 7th seed in the East with 1.5 games from being out of the playoffs. That does not strike me as a "contender".
The standard NBA contract provides that when a player is waived and signs with a new team for $X, his original team gets reimbursed 50% of the difference between $X and the minimum salary for a 1 year veteran. The minimum salary for a 1 year vet is $816,482 this season. So, the set-off amount for Smith would be $(X-816,482)*0.5 http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q66 What this means is that for every extra $1 Smith makes on the new contract, he only really gets 50 cents pre-tax. So, I am not sure whether how much difference it makes that HOU has the bi-annual exception or Miami havs the $2.6M DPE.
so Houston can offer about $250,000 more than Dallas and Miami can offer about $250,000 more than Houston. How much does Smith value $250,000-$500,000? my guess the nod goes to the team he can compete now with and fit.
