If you had to trade for him with Detroit, there's no market because he's not producing up to his contract, but if he'll be making the bi-level exception at the most, you have to pick him up. This is a guy who, with Atlanta, could throw it down, and could pick up anybody on a switch and defend the last shot. If you look back, you'll see him get several blocks on perimeter players trying for the game winner. If he can play that role for this team, he'll be an excellent pick up. On the other hand, if he wants to play third fiddle and try jacking up a ton of threes and bad jumpers, he'll ride the pine.
Just imagine him and Brewer out on the court together with either Howard and Dmo protecting the rim- allowing those two to play the passing lanes. Our fast breaks would be nuts.
I see him playing a similar role to Parsons as a playmaking PF. We should easily lead the league in blockshots and fastbreak points. I'd feel more comfortable with Smith guarding bigs like LMA in the playoffs
He's instantly the best PF on this team if he comes to Houston and people don't want him? Don't know how many Doc Rivers gifs I can use but:
It obviously wouldn't be a lineup we'd have in that situation- just something to employ every so often.

They need his salary to make the NBA salary floor. I read they are like 10 million below the minimum team salary right now.
They can play him 40 minutes and just clear the tarmac for him to get massive stats. If he goes 18 and 8 with 2 blocks and 3-4 assists, while making $7-10mill, there would be a first round pick Hinkie could take.

Mavs were not interested in him until Cuban found out Morey is considering adding Smith to the roster.
Exactly the type of low-risk, high reward type of economic move that the spurs thrive on..not surprised yet they're interested. Chemistry wise, I feel like Smith would feel immense pressure to shape up in such a classy organization
The Rockets is undoubtedly the best option from his point of view. He could have the starting PF position right there. The Rockets would need to waive somebody to make that roster spot available. The Kings have a free roster spot available. Smoove would not like to come from the bench behind Rudy Gay, so he'd need to play PF in the Kings as well. The Kings already have 4 PFs, so they would need to make some kind of trade with one or two of them.
